"I was visiting My Mother in Southern Spain, We took a weekend road trip to visit her friends in a small town called; Alvaiázere in Portugal...About a 7 hr Drive from Malaga, Spain. As her friends had recently moved into a house that had been vacant for 10 yrs, it was undergoing a MAJOR RENOVATION...So we were booked into a Small Hotel with a Restaurant 5 mins from our friends a 10-15 minute drive from a town called Torma, which is home to the historic Knights Templar Castle Convent of Christ Monastery. The hotel is also about a 30-40 Minute drive from Coimbra...which was the capital of Portugal before Lisbon...it is a BEAUTIFUL City! The hotel was not a large one, But it was clean, comfortable very reasonably priced. As it was a smaller hotel, we were fortunate to be cared for by the owner of the hotel restaurant. This gentleman works in both places and is one of the kindest, attentive, hospitable people, in this type of business, that I have EVER ENCOUNTERED! Our friends have been in that area for 3 months, and often go to the restaurant for meals or even just a coffee. We were welcomed by the owner of the hotel restaurant like we were old friends. The food in the restaurant was very well prepared, every meal we had was DELICIOUS! The accommodations were comfortable and very clean. IF I was FORCED to say something negative about the hotel, it would only be that the showers were rather small, the bedside lamps were not conducive to read by, as they were small, the bulbs-dim. My first night, the heater in my room did not heat the room very well. The next morning, I mentioned it to the owner, as we left to go sightseeing for the day. He was so apologetic and not only did he move me into a different room, he brought my bags in and as soon as we walked into the hotel lobby...He had my key in hand! The 2nd day, when going to take a shower...the bathroom lightbulb went...As we left the 2nd day on another excursion, I mentioned that to him. He changed the bulb before we had breakfast! I'm American whose 2nd language is French and I also speak understand quite a bit of Spanish, My Mother lives in Spain and speaks Spanish, but not French. Portuguese is a complicated language as it has some similarities to Spanish, but much of it is different altogether. Neither of us spoke Portuguese other than the obligatory basic phrases/words, i.e..Please, Thank You, Good Day, Good Night, Yes, No, and a few others. As the hotel is in a smaller, rural area...many of the residents don't speak English. The owner spoke very little, However...As we went inside our friends introduced us, We found out that the Portuguese owner, used to work in France...So, to simply make it easier for the owner, My Mother, Myself...The owner I communicated in French. I'm quite certain that even if neither he nor I spoke French...we would still be able to communicate, and I believe that to be true for anyone who goes there. I go back to the food...it's made fresh, they use locally grown produce and the menu selection is very good, as are the prices. The rest of the staff we interacted with were quite pleasant. It may be a small hotel in the countryside, But they have a BIG HEART, and TRULY WANT your experience with them to be a good one! In closing, If you ever travel to Portugal and take a road trip to see Coimbra Tomar...This is the place to stay...quiet, friendly, a great value, as well as being centrally located between those two towns. I would absolutely, recommend it to anyone else who might be in that area, and I would definitely return there again...Even when our friends house is finished, and their guest rooms are done...If only for a meal...I'm there!"

"Os Grelahdos is a household name in our family, we visit as often as we can whenever we are nearby and have done for over 10 years. Staff and chef are incredibly friendly, speak a little English and cook the best steaks going. The food is super fresh, delicious and packed full of flavour! Worth a drive, you may need to book on busy nights. Great value for money and good wine list. Couldn't fault them. We will be back soon Alvano! Obrigado"
