"Most don't consider a hotel dining room for a night out but The Arms in the Lord Nelson Hotel should be on your list. After several visits we have come to look forward to their smooth, flavourful seafood chowder with lots of shrimp, scallops, salmon...and more. The long-braised short ribs define fall-off-the bone Oh so tender with rich gravy to douse the whipped mashed potatoes, so good they must have been from PEI. So much we take home a box and get a second supper a day or two later. Also needed to have an early breakfast with last swallow completed by AM to meet the requirements of a certain health scan at the nearby Victoria General Hospital and so put in our breakfast order the night before and were seated just as the doors opened at and were eating in just minutes and done in the allotted time. Steady but not overwhelming number or guests. Virus compliant. Next time we will try other items unless we succumb again to the siren-call of the chowder and short ribs. Definitely add The Arms to your dining list while in Haifax."

"Booked online at 200 plus CAD for this room. I wish it was disclosed that it is a homeless shelter prior to booking as I would have booked elsewhere. First off they would not honor the 76000 points I had as they 'expired ' due to Hilton policy. You know who doesn 't operate this way? IHG Rewards. As such I was not able to book my stay with the 50000 points required and it cost over 200 for the night. The staff are fine, and the location would be convenient if not for the homeless people. I understand everyone has the right to stay there, but I also feel it should be disclosed prior to booking so people make informed decisions with their money. If it were just me and I was on business it would not bother me personally. But with my wife and two small children it was a bit much. The elevator was never empty and always smelled of cannabis and cigarettes. The hallways too. Upon waking up everyone in my family was congested and stuffed up. The beds are way too soft and lumpy and sleep was not great either. I was unaware there is a difference between a Hampton and a Doubletree and as such was surprised there was no included breakfast. It is on me for assuming a 250 a night room would include breakfast, but needless to say was still disappointed. I have had back to back bad experiences with Hilton now and I will be changing my loyalty to IHG."

"I love stir fry and so dropped at the restaurant for lunch. Some of the ingredients were not fresh particularly onion had a stale smell and sweet potato was not fresh. The taste was not so great."

"My wife and I ate (along with a longtime friend were were treating) ate lunch at The Canteen. We have eaten here before lunch and wanted to go back again on this latest visit to HRM. Dartmouth is my wife's hometown and we know it...very well. My mistake, I again ordered the seafood chowder. Half the bowl was mussel shells and not nearly enough seafood - more potato and bacon actually. Our friend asked for a simple garden salad and instead she was brought a heavy kale salad (which she doesn't like) and I was charged or so for it. She left of it and we were embarrassed that she really had nothing to eat at all. I've had many seafood chowders over the years (including elsewhere on this same trip) and this was far from outstanding. In our minds, this location was overrated and owner/chef seems overly impressed their own menu selection and ingredients. Too bad, it is a great downtown location and the COVID protocols were excellent. Plus the server was attentive, if not reactive to our guest's clear lack of satisfaction with her lunch."
