"Great sushi! Super fresh fish, no fishy after taste or anything. The service was amazing as well very kind and fast! We ordered 3 different types of Nigiri's (Ebi, Imari Tobiko) all of which were very tasty! Miso soup was delicious as well! Highly recommend!!"

"The food was very good, however the service was slow. We were seated for at least 8 10 minutes before someone brought us water. We had to wait another 5 to 10 minutes before our waitress came by to take our drink order. We did not get to the restaurant until 8 pm, and they close at 9. By the time we received our food it was almost 9 o'clock and I felt rushed to finish eating and leave the restaurant. Our waitress was friendly and the food was good."

"Automated sushi bar, fair prices, multiple selections, try the fried chicken wings to go for an at home late night snack! Speed train delivers wide variety of Japanese food.. I find a combination of sushi and fried items is a great way to explore their menu, so typically its ebi, sake (salmon), and ahi for the raw sushi and a couple of the dragon rolls or fried shrimp rolls with teriyaki glaze.. also try the soft shell crab and maybe avoid their pre-packaged California or tuna roll.."

"Amazing food and staff. I had ramen the house, it was pleasantly rich and not too salty, leaves room to season if you like salt or spicy food. I also had a California role and 2 orders of the Ahi role presented both tastefully and beautifully. Wide range of liqueurs, beers and cocktails. Some portions of beer are large and can be divided into a party, i.e. bombs or the hitachino line beer."

"Takenoko Sushi is hands down THE best sushi place in Hilo! Takenoko's is a small intimate sushi restaurant with only 8 seats but has the best service and high quality food. Reservation is highly recommended as the wait list is fully booked months in advance. I've only been here twice, but I can honestly say it's my number one go-to spot for fresh authentic sushi. I love my nigiri sushi, but Takenoko's has really gotten me out of my comfort zone to try new things. Aside from your standard toro, salmon and ebi nigiri, they offer unique types of seafood nigiri that you probably don't really see anywhere else, Such as: Anago (Seawater Eel) Ankimo (Monk Fish Liver) Hirame (Flounder) Hotaru Ika (Firefly Squid) Sakuradai (Red Snapper) and even wasabi on vanilla ice cream! Who would've thought to make that a combo? They also offer BYOB, so feel free to bring your favorite drinks to pair with your food! I wish I got her name, but the waitress that helped us today (Monday, March 27) from 6:30-8pm was very helpful and nice! We asked about the Monk Fish Liver out of our curiosity, and because of her recommendation, my husband and I have come to love it! If you have the patience and the budget, I would highly recommend going to Takenono Sushi!"
