"While it is great that Buddhism in Taiwan holds its vegetarian roots (as opposed to Japan, Tibet or SE Asia), it is disappointed that Buddhists in Taiwan choose to turn a blind eye to the suffering of dairy cows. Like most, this cafe is 100% vegetarian and almost 100% non-vegan. Even after a nice long conversation with the staff I was unable to order and get a vegan meal. SET MEALS Staff understood that I did not want milk products and claimed that most of the set meals were vegan, but the pudding still included cream and the main dish had fake ham that is practically never vegan (from Buddhist facilities). My guess is that by labeling what 's vegan would they recognize there 's something lacking with consumption milk, so it is better to do just as the problem does not exist? It is so bad if Buddhism, as he is taught here, is all about compassion and service, but somehow the cows are omitted. SEITE I was sure the bagels were vegan (they apparently checked the ingredients). They promised me one without cheese, but they still contained butter and fake meat. An employee admitted there was butter, and suggested that I give it to someone?? The other tried to insist that it was (melted) mayonnaise, bright yellow by mustard. I know the fat taste of butter and that was it. So? The original Happycow listing remarks soybean cheese for bagels. I think the reason for this confusion is that employees say that vegans can eat their cheese because it comes from a natural farm where cows are milked by hand. They accept that cows are killed when they stop producing milk, but it does not seem to disturb them, possibly because they believe that the bad karma will go to the person they eat, not the person who uses their milk. You do not even have soy milk for drinks (or Chinese tea) so practically the only vegan drink available is black coffee. Two stars because the staff understood veganism, but could not be harassed to make a meal, so I let hunger was wasting money. RESTAURANT? There is also a restaurant right in front of the temple, but they were even less knowledgeable/helpable. The employee I spoke with just broke out laughing when I asked what was vegan, said it's all vegan, and then when I explained the milk, she said only two dishes used milk, but the odds of it are practically zero. It would be wise to bring food to Puli with you!"
