This restaurant is my go to for dumplings and green tea. If you are looking for the most amazing and flavoursome dumplings this restaurant is a must. I visit at least every month with my husband and we are never disappointed. Even at this restaurants busiest the staff are always accomodating and the service is speedy. What Kevon Kertzmann doesn't like about New Shanghai – Charlestown:
The restaurant had bad interiors, utensils are everywhere, and airconditioning didn't seem to be working esp it was a very hot day. I keep on going to the bar to follow up my orders which later on i realised that the waiter forgot my order. The pork bun and xia long bao were both nice but the chicken, pork and noodles were just so so. The servings were quite small too. Wont be back and we regret deciding on this rest... The accommodation is five star however looking at the dinner restaurant only, the food tasted excellentThe portion sizes were too small for the size.
I just completed my first trip to Australia / NZ and this was one of my favorite places we stayed.
Amazing place !! When you first get there you are greeted by Peter with a glass of champagne ! And a tour of the property ..

We are so lucky to have this fabulous restaurant in our lovely City of Newcastle and for our family it's almost always our 'go to' for any celebrations. We have eaten here more than a dozen times and it is consistently excellent - fresh and authentic. We politely book first and always find the staff to be warm and welcoming. It's extremely busy and popular so to help them we don't 'dilly-dally' or mess about with ordering - we order quickly! That's our tip: know what you want and send your order quickly (even if it means politely going up to the cashier with your table number and a smile, on super busy nights). The kitchen is wonderfully efficient and your meals will come very promptly (sometimes you need to remind them about your rice). New Shanghai is an absolute favourite for us - the pan friend Pork dumplings have hot broth inside so if you like, break them open with your spoon and try with soy and balsamic vinegar which you'll find on the table. Fantastic.
