My wife and I went here for a celebratory supper and we weren’t disappointed. Firstly the vibe is fairly chilled, you don’t need to be too smartly dressed, and if the season and the weather permit, the views are astonishing. The tables are nicely spaced,... View all feedback.
What MJH1 doesn't like about The Herring:
Used the Bedruthan steps hotel quite a bit in the recent past but fell out with them a bit due to their dynamic pricing strategy and have stayed at either watergate bay or st enodoc more recently That said, I bit the bullet and we... View all feedback.
The ambiance and vibes at the restaurant were cozy, but the table was not very comfortable. It was round and made it hard to relax. The food was very high quality, with small portions served like samples. The menu included planned starters, intermediate courses, and desserts, with three of each so you could try a variety of dishes. The main course was also small and customizable. It was a thoughtful Valentine's Day gift from my partner and I enjoyed the experience and drinks. However, I probably wouldn't choose to dine here again as it's not really our style. If you prefer larger portions, this may not be the place for you. But if you enjoy small, high-quality dishes, definitely give it a try. I should note that one of the dishes had a strange bug in the salad and it was off-putting. I didn't eat it and immediately informed the server, who was very apologetic but didn't offer any further resolution.
The restaurant offers excellent and intriguing 3-course meals. Their cheese custard is a special highlight. The menu features delicious flavors such as game tart, monkfish, bread and butter pudding, and cheeses. The only downside is that there could be more meat in the main course and less portion size for the desserts.
Split decision tonight. My wife thought a 3.5 and me a 4.5. Her reasoning was seasoning a bit lacking, service particularly slow at start (20 mins a drink to get to us) and no info on the website that the regular dinner would not be available on a Saturday night in January only a no choice set 4 course tasting menu. For me I agree you have to keep your web page up to date but food wise what we had I thought was very good. The beetroot dish was excellent but the burnt cream was very neutral and added little to the dish. It tasted like clotted cream to us. A soft/goat cheese would have worked better in our opinion. Scallop was very good but a touch more seasoning would have made this a 10 out 10 dish. The Venison was very accurately cooked and we enjoyed the cabbage but cried out for more carb rather than a small splodge of purée. Great sauce. Honey parfait we both thought was very nice. Shout out to whoever baked the bread as it was epic as was the cep butter. Service was a tad erratic, lots of people around but not really observing what stage each table was at. So divided really. I would come back my wife would need a bit of convincing.
We have stayed in both Bedruthan and the Scarlet before and have loved our experience. However, this was our first time in the newly rebranded Ogo restaurant. We were really excited as this was meant to be an upgrade from their bistro-style Wild Café. However, we were left feeling hungry and disappointed. The portion sizes were beyond a joke. I understand fine dining usually entails smaller portions, but what we received was just plain tight. The menu works so that we receive one of each starter and side and then only have to pick between a meat/fish/veg main. On the surface, this sounds generous, but when you consider the starters and sides must be shared between two, it quickly becomes disappointing. Unfortunately I didn’t take a picture, but if I were to describe the anna potatoes we received, it was one slice no bigger than an extra chunky chip! Worse yet, we had to slice this in half so that we could share it! The sirloin beef we ordered came out as two slices of steak. By this time, we had already decided it was not worth ordering dessert for the extra cost, despite being starving! I don’t believe the meal as a whole even exceeded 300 calories. The only reason this isn’t one star is because the food tasted good! It was just massively let down by the fact we were left very hungry, after saving ourselves for a special meal. If you are debating the two, I strongly recommend just eating at the Wild Café.
Food was absolutely delicious every night we ate here 5 times and the menu changed every night. Good value for money, great service Special mention for George (the passionate Chef) and Louise (his wife and waitress/chef) they make a great team and were so lovely.
