Best Japanese in the City. I have come here multiple times and I have enjoyed it every time. The food is quite good and the staff are very warm. I come here for the udon soup which is my favorite Japanese dish (I'd recommend the tempura udon). The downside is the food is quite expensive here. I know Japanese food is expensive in Edmonton but having to pay $15 for a bowl of udon is hard to swallow when its $2 in Japan... View all feedback.
What Victor N dislikes about Furusato Japanese Restaurant:
Working in Edmonton and wanted to eat Japanese food. Found this place while driving so decided to try based partly on the name. Furusato means 'home town or country ' so I thought the owners may be Japanese. They weren 't. No offense to owners but was thinking they would have some home style dishes. Decor was a little tired and a mix of Japanese and other Asian. Service by our waitress was good. The food was what I w... View all feedback.

About 15 years ago this was a great sushi restaurant. I went back for nostalgic reasons and was taught a lesson. Sushi is actually served here. But the sushi slices were paper thin. The chicken karaage was literally chicken wings! I have never been served chicken wings in place of chicken karaage and I have ordered it many times (including Japan.) The edamame was good.
This place used to be packed to the rafters. It was always full on weekends with a big line up to get in and the food quality was superb. After the restaurant changed ownership, one of the first things they did is allow reservations. This created a situation where there were line ups but empty tables. Very frustrating.Regardless, the food quality declined and the prices were high. We stopped going there about 2 years ago but thought we'd try it again recently. Walked in to a 2/3 empty restaurant on a weekend night. Not a good sign. I was happy to see prices had not gone up so they were quite reasonable. We got our food and the tuna in the rolls was obviously a bit old. The rest of the sushi was passable but not great. Overall it's not bad. Average. So if you're in the neighbourhood, I'd try it but I'm not driving across town again for it.
The quality and generous size of our salmon and toro sashimi is unmatched, best in the city !! Relaxing atmosphere allows us just to sit and enjoy the food, unlike certain restaurants that rush you the bill to get you to leave . a surprise bonus we get free fried banana dessert :)
Super fresh fish, and very tasty rolls. Furusato is a very unassuming exterior but inside is loaded with unique rolls like butterfly. Great flavours matched with great presentation. Just a smidge expensive.
