The order came very, very quickly (Max. Which wasn't exactly positive. We each had the knuckle of dumplings. Neither the look was appealing, nor was it good in taste. The dumplings were certainly not homemade, with the sauce we can not say. The knuckles were very fat, sometimes very dry. On a Tuesday, myself and two friends, Werner, Mike, and Uffnik, found ourselves in Munich. After finishing our official business around noon, we were all starving. And not just a little hungry – we needed something hearty to satisfy us. I suggested we try the haxe, a traditional Bavarian dish. As we made our way to Stachus tram, we encountered a lively scene – the typical Bavarian weather, a bit chilly but still with blue skies. The fountains sprayed a fine mist over the bustling Stachus square, keeping the fresh strawberries at the market stands looking vibrant. As we walked towards Viktualienmarkt, passing by street musicians from various countries, we couldn't help but notice the abundance of fresh strawberries being sold. Werner was particularly taken with the strawberries – so fresh and only €0.90 per kilo! The market was a mix of tourists and locals, creating a colorful and lively atmosphere. We finally arrived at the restaurant, where we were warmly greeted and promptly seated at a table. The place was not very crowded, but that didn't dampen our spirits. We ordered the haxe, and our strawberry-loving friend found delight in the calf and pork versions. The food arrived quickly, thanks to the ongoing grill preparation. While some parts of the meal were a bit overcooked and dried out, the meat closer to the bone was juicy and flavorful. The bill came, and we were surprised to see even a simple bread request listed at a high price. Even Werner, who is usually composed, was taken aback. Overall, while the quality of the food was good, the prices seemed a bit steep for what we received. Perhaps it's more fitting for Asian tourists, but for us, it didn't quite hit the mark.
I hadn't visited Haxnbauer in a while, but decided to return to downtown Munich during a recent visit. The restaurant's dark wood decor and traditional Bavarian ambiance remained unchanged, which we found pleasant and enjoyed. However, we were disappointed by the service. The pork knuckle was served quickly, as it was pre-cooked and only briefly reheated. We tried veal, pork knuckle, and some liver cheese. Unfortunately, the liver cheese was served last without asking our preference, and it was too spicy for our taste. We tried to flag down the server for sweet mustard, which took about 5 minutes in a relatively empty restaurant. By the time we got the mustard, the liver cheese had gone cold. The pork knuckles were good with crispy skin and well-seasoned meat, although the sauce seemed store-bought. The dumplings and beer were satisfactory, but we were surprised that only Swabian beer was available in a traditional Munich restaurant. Overall, Haxnbauer may be a good starting point for tourists, but locals may prefer other Bavarian establishments nearby. While I have no intention of returning soon, if you enjoy pork knuckle and visiting Haxn, then it may be worth a try. However, as a Munich resident, I would not recommend it as a top dining destination.
For anyone who likes this typical piece of meat from Bavaria, the Haxnbauer is an absolute must. The best witches on this planet in the heart of the Munich city centre, with delicious supplements, fresh beer and well-launched and operational operation. What do you want more!!!
Anyone who loves it is in the right place in the restaurant Haxnbauer in the Scholastikahaus in Munich's old town. Here you can eat fresh from the grill, a visit is especially worthwhile for people who want to get to know Bavarian food culture. I would like to stress that there is a wide range of vegetarian dishes here. For a haxnlocal, no matter what I think.
