The best of authenticity. Very good meat and raclette offer. Beside an excellent meat or cheese treat, here, you get a hint of what local life really may be. Tough mountain conditions forged unique people. Chez Raymond you get a hint of the local approach...to life. I also enjoyed to see that many young local Evolenards go to this restaurant, that makes you feel less like a stranger. View all feedback.
What Fiorentino Gallo doesn't like about Au Vieux Mazot:
After a day of skiing we had the choice between a co-op fondue or a restaurant. and we must have fooled ourselves of choice or fell a bad day! At the entrance, we're being devised, barely a word of welcome. we had taken a fondue and almost seemed to disturb when we asked for the pepper. as Valais this atmosphere shocked us in this place, yet reputed to be friendly. the melting in itself was good but we left without s... We came for dinner one evening and chose to sit outside on a warm summers night. Blankets were available for anyone finding the air to cool. This is a lovely old restaurants with an open fire/grill outside and featuring traditional furniture and decoration. We ordered...the traditional raclette and a couple of other local dishes and were served promptly and efficiently. Subsequent servings took a little bit of time. We were expecting a few more trimmings with the raclette, but the cheese was outstanding. The polenta with rabbit was very tasty and a huge portion of meat very yummy. While the service was efficient, we found it slightly impersonal. But the big surprise was that when we asked for the bill, the initial price was reduced as we had eaten less raclette portions than initially intended and the restaurant dropped the price accordingly. We found this a very generous and honest gesture towards their clients. Thank you.
The place is nice but it is rather expensive for what it is. over you need to fight to get served your raclette without limit.
The food was very good (we had polenta with cheese, ham and potatoes) but this is mostly a review for Raymonde. At the end of a good day hike to Pic D'Artsinol we end up in Evolene after the last bus for Les Hauderes where...we had our room. When Raymonde learned that we need a ride, she made sure she gets us one and end up being driven by one of the ladies working there. Friendly, good hearted people we will never forget! Thank you.
The food is really excellent, but the service is moderate and hygiene is really disgusting! In time of COVID-19 no single person is wearing mask, distance between guests is from 10cm to 1m, there is no disinfection... When guests change table is NOT cleaned (not...even with a simple rag). Open bread is passed from one table to another, the same with salt shaker.
We had dinner outside, under parasols, and were served by the owner and help dressed in the traditional dress. The raclette is melted on an open wood fire, so you wait a bit, but it’s worth it ! Delicious.
