During our visit to Fortress Louisbourg we took a quick lunch at the Grandchamps Restaurant. The Grandchamps is fashioned after an old time inn. It is community seating and we had the opportunity to chat with a couple from Ontario who were on holiday great experience. The menu is limited but we enjoyed our pea soup and bread and the courtesy extended by our friendly server. It was definitely a fun experience. View all feedback.
What Jenn N doesn't like about Grandchamps Restaurant:
We should have stopped for food before getting to the fortress. They have a cafe which does not serve anything but baked goods obviously to force you to go to a restaurant. This is the low class restaurant and you sit with other patrons. They only give you a spoon and a huge cloth as a bib/napkin. The servers are in period costume. This part is all great. We both had soup veggie and fish which were quite expensive. T... View all feedback.
We went there for lunch. What a feast! the external temperature had just changed in the last hour to the fortress of the city. So we wanted to eat a warm and comforting meal. Menu map: Inputs: peas or vegetables soup and bread (small or large bowl) main dish: meat or fish of the day accompanied by vegetables, peas or vegetables soup, tea or coffee for 18.99$Our choice: rare bird artisanal beer, peas soup and meat-grazed plate (dinde,) vegetables, sauce. dessert: cold cake we enjoyed our meal served as in the 18th century, that is, a simple white cotton tablecloth on the table and a single spoon to eat all our dishes. the most: a very nice welcome in French and a very good service. It's the best pea soup we've had for a long time. the paste was excellent and the delicious dessert. We keep a very good memory of this meal at the fortress of louisburg!
Absolutely disgusting! A small soup $6.99 (3/4-1 cup) and a large soup $10.99 (1 1/2-1 3/4 cups). They served it with dry, very thinly sliced bread. Served in bowls that almost took your appetite away just looking at them wondering how clean are these dishes.Do I sound bitter? We are on a tour with 48 people and I have yet to find someone on the tour who would give it more than a one out of five. Very disappointing!
The restaurant is an interesting idea by bringing you back to the settlers time. However the food was pricey and service was not very attentive or friendly.
There are 2 'restaurants' within the Fortress of Louisbourg - Hotel de la Marine, which is for upper-class folk, and Grandchamps, which is for the lower classes. Lower class sounded like much more fun to us! You are seated at communal long tables, so you get to meet other patrons. It really is an experience, not just a meal. We were only given one large pewter spoon to use as a utensil. and big bids that felt like we were wearing bedsheets! The food was good - the fish, mussels, bread & cheese, and apple tarts for dessert. The only part I wasn't too excited about was the vegetable soup. The service was very good - our server was attentive, and quite funny while in character. Would be fun for kids!
We came back to the Fortress of Louisbourg twice in one season just to sample the food at this fantastic tavern. The savoury dishes are simple yet exquisite. Mussels to pea soup to meat pies paired with good ale or rum punch. The staff are fun yet professional. Order to apple tart to start! Check out their menu online to whet your appetite! This is truly one one the best restaurants in Canada....
