Located in Melbourne's chinatown, this is an excellent spot for a great feed before theatre. We had a an array of dishes, but the picture menu was great to give us an idea of this fabulous food.TIP: Go for the chicken or beef dishes which are flash fried or deep fried; fill up with rice and also the dumplings are all house made and delicious!!!The access is tough along the streets of Chinatown; but the toilets are cle... What User doesn't like about City Orchids Garden:
We headed to China town from the 'Kinky Boots' show for a late night feed. Given we were quite hungry and there were hardly any other customers we did expect that the food would be served reasonably quick. 3/4 hour later and still waiting, the meals came out one by one. Most of the group (6 of us) had finished sharing the meals when the gluten free order finally came to the table. Most meals were cold, none were outs... View all feedback.
Gordon Ramsay would be appalled by this place! The staff seemed disinterested, the glasses were dirty, and the food was terrible. The san choy construction tasted like it had frozen vegetables in it, and the fried tofu was like rubber. When we asked for soy sauce, the waitress rolled her eyes before begrudgingly bringing it. The employees didn't check on us, and when I discreetly asked about the vegetables, the waiter admitted they were frozen. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, he didn't even apologize. The bad taste from this experience still lingers with me.
I have been coming to this restaurant for years because the food is great. However, the service was not up to par on my last visit. For example, I ordered an appetizer and main dish, but the waiter brought out the main dish before the appetizer, leaving the appetizer cold by the time we got to it. I was very disappointed as I have always enjoyed this place in the past.
I only gave this place a 1 because there was no option for -1000. This was the worst service I have ever received in all my experience dining at restaurants around the world. The waiter was extremely rude, arrogant, and should not be working in hospitality. The food was below average and overpriced. It does not reflect the renowned Melbourne gastronomy scene. This was a massive disappointment and a complete waste of money and time.
Tonight there was one table, and the other noticed us waiting at the door, and did nothing, continued to delete one table. without any recognition....ordered two chicken and maissuppen to start. they were tasteless. had no taste at all. left the suppen, told the waitress and everything she said was “oh I will tell the cook”. very disappointed by my meal tonight.
I should have heeded my son’s warning no Chinese customers at all! Nice enough decor but the food was very ordinary. Neither the Mongolian beef nor the KungPo prawns tasted very nice. Very stingy with the wine too. Won’t be back.
