CATHAY CHOW MEIN - Minneapolis

Food was great with the exception of the cream cheese wontonsThey had less than 1/2 a teaspoon of cream cheese and were mostly just the wonton.

Surprisingly, I was contacted by Hugo, the Owner of Cathay, who was nice enough to inform me they DO make the traditional brown gravy chow mein! He told me

Simply put: this family owned and operated Chinese restaurant is the absolute best Chinese place in the south metro. Period.

My family and I have been going to this place for years! We often get chow mein, egg foo young, and fried rice. In our experience, the food has remained consistent and the people there are always friendly. My dad likes their egg foo young best out of all the other places he's tried it at because of it's dark tasting and savory gravy. The chow mein has a very light gravy by contrast and we often spruce it up with their slightly spicy sweet and sour sauce. Good food. Generous sizes.

I love Cathay Chow Mein. I'm 33 years old and I've been going there my entire life. My dad went there when he was a kid and still goes there to this day. He's 72. Great selection. Great sweet and sour sauce. Every order gets free wontons. And everything is cooked fresh. It's just a little hole-in-the-wall that's easy to miss but it is well worth your time.
