This restaurant is in a converted cottage, so has a very homely atmosphere with friendly staff. It has an extensive menu, with very realistic prices. Although licensed, it also lets you BYO bottled wine. The meals are of a very consistant quality, and I have been t this restaurant many times over the years. Always a pleasant meal and a good time. We to the Penshurst Cottage tonight and had some really nice garlic bread. The entree was cold had to be returned. Had to ask twice for a drink to be served. Asked for some dinner plates to share a meal and they brought bread and butter plates. Our experience with this restaurant yesterday was from my point was ordinary.The meal I ordered was a seafood hot pot. It was mostly soup with a few prawns, bits of fish, couple of clams and some pieces of crab claws that was over cooked. Also what I payed was over the top indeed.My wife and friends meals were ok and they enjoyed them. Lucky my wife could not finish her meal and I finished her plate.Otherwise the service was ok.
We have been going to this restaurant for many years and it never fails to impress. The food is consistently great and yummy. Large servings too. Very family orientated and run.
When we entered the restaurant we waited for what felt like forever to be seated, but no one attended to us. Patrons stared at us as they ate their meals, and we noticed one waitress rushing around the tables with five minutes before she realised we were there. Things were off to a poor start.We were seated against a wall, and it was immediately evident the waitress was in a rush. She haphazardly threw down some menus and cutlery, and asked if we wanted drinks. The selection of food was enormous, and the choice was varied - Pasta, Seafood, Beef, Chicken, Veal and Lamb. However we noticed most of the meals came with the same sides of boiled vegetables and potato. Unusually for us, we both chose Pastas as it seemed fitting in a "traditional" Italian restaurant. We were disappointed with both entrees and mains. The calamari was from a packet - stringy circles, crumbed and dipped in the deep fryer. They were served with store-bought tartare sauce and a 'salad' which was merely a garnish of wilted lettuce and one slice of dry tomato. The mains were hefty portions of carbohydrate with a little bit of meat. I couldn't finish the entire bolognese because it was all pasta. Flavours were bland. Nothing special. Overall there was nothing great to say about this place and we felt ripped off by the high prices. Mains were about $30 AUD and I could have cooked something more intricate at home. I wouldn't have such a harsh review if the cost of our meals was in the cheaper/affordable range but for the atmosphere, poor service and average food this wasn't worth it.
A bit pricey but the food is ok ,somewhere to go for a reasonable meal every now and then ,popular with locals
