Restaurante Avó Maria - Porto

The restaurant is on the promenade on the banks of the Douro River. The location is fantastic with a great view of everything happening on the river and promenade. The menu selection was very good and the food was delicious. The staff were all very friendly and very helpful

Olha que boa surpresa. Resolvi ser turista na minha cidade e junto ao rio Douro, em plena Ribeira, jantar na explanada de um dos restaurantes apinhados de gentes de outras paragens. Ao microfone um senhor cantava uns fados e outros géneros tornando o ambiente digno de um filme do Manoel de Oliveira já agora para o Porto estar inteiramente representado). As entradas razoáveis não faziam crer em nada de extraordinário mas a dourada bastante fresca e saborosa, assim como os bifes com cogumelos e batatas fritas que também foi pedido e provei) completaram o cenário de mais uma noite a repetir.

Custo x benefíciosç deixa a desejar um pouco, uma vez que se pode, como eu, ter que aguardar um tanto para atendimento. Ademais, a localização é muito boa, e a comida honesta, apesar de, como falei, um pouco cara (cerca de 16 euros média/prato).

Restaurant looked lovely, with gorgeous views of the river. Our waiter didn’t speak very good English so ordering a medium rare streak was a slight challenge. After waiting for 50 minutes, I asked how much longer our food would be. They had clearly forgotten our order, so it finally came out about 20 minutes later. I queried where my port wine sauce was and the waiter told me it was on the steak but it’s a plain steak I said. Apparently, the sauce was “invisible”! I think there was a loss of translation somewhere here, but the waiter was right as there was no sauce! So I asked if I could have some to pour on my plain steak. Unsurprisingly, it never came. I wish we had explored more restaurants on the Ribeira and avoided this tourist trap. Obviously it was also over priced.

Came here many times before and it never disappoints. Food and the service is great. The location is wonderful on the Ribeira close to the water. I and my parents will definitely come back again.
