First time and it didn't disappoint! When I heard they have Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings) I got excited to come here. br/ br/ When we arrive, they're still closed (they close between 2:30-4:30pm) and we got there almost 4pm but the owner still entertained welcomed us. We ordered their Chicken Chow Mein Xiao Long Bao (8 for $8.85). Everything was good! Although I thought the dumplings would be bigger, they're the pe... View all feedback.
What Mini Meda doesn't like about Hai Shang Restaurant:
We are new to the city and had been given a thumbs up that the food at Hai Shang was excellent. In our experience it was the worst we’ve ever eaten! The house special rice had virtually nothing but pale over cooked rice, not a...shrimp to be found. The ginger beef inedible! The lemon chicken was horrible with greasy breading that fell off when picked up and the sauce was like water! The egg foo young was burnt! The f... View all feedback.
Garnish in black buds was usually wobbled, with an average amount of salty garnels. shark noodles were cooked not stir fried, and very blande. the hunch in sweetness was a lot of silly, with carrots and celery. veal was hard. the free chicken fried...rice was dry and tasteless, except the salt. the white rice was good. I can say sincerely that this was over four decades the worst Chinese takeout I've ever had. I know that they all do this, but to supplement injuries, we have seven non-recycleable styrofoam and black plastic containers to add the site! that was our Christmas dinner.
We had visited this restaurant twice during our family trip from Ottawa to Banff. The first shortly after we arrived from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg and the second when we finished visiting the Assiniboine Park 2 weeks later. We selected this restaurant mostly because it...is cheap and opens late until 23:00. The owner of the restaurant is very welcoming despite us coming in late at 22:10 during our first visit (most restaurant do not accept that late). Even though there is only her husbund and herself still on duty (all of her staff are off-shift already), they still make great dishes and kindly and honestly suggested a few dishes that they can still prepare for the remainder of the night. As a result, we all enjoyed a very late dinner and mostly enjoyed their Shanghainese fish with Chinese rice wine dish. Our second experience is also great. This time we came at 20:00 and the owner immediately recognized us and welcomed us to our seats. She also gave us honest opinions and suggestions about their dishes and even suggested us to try new dishes and even promised us that we would not regret about their new dishes. It turns out that their new dishes are fantastic and we are for sure satisfied with their dishes. From both experiences, the owners are very friendly, honest and helpful. Once you enter the restaurant no matter if you are new or frequent visitors, they will always treat you as a friend. I have almost never known a restaurant where the owners will treat you as a friend since the first visit. I would personally recommend Shanghainese food. If you want to get the best experience and never leave disappointed, be sure to ask the owner, waiter and waitresses what they would suggest and also honest opinions about their dishes. Thank you Hai Shang for the best restaurant experience during our whole trip. Highly recommend this restaurant.
The food at Hai Shang is delicious and we have a special fondness for the soup dumplings with that vinegary red sauce. The young man who greeted us was friendly and the service overall was prompt and attentive. However, we ordered the soup dumplings (their...term not mine as an appetizer and they arrived just as the meal was ending. The excuse was that it takes a long time to boil water. But wouldn't you have the water near boiling for the supper hour? Especially when the dumplings are one of the most popular items? Even worse was the reaction of the other server, older woman (perhaps the owner? when we told her that the BBQ pork in our chow mien had an unpleasant sour taste. She came back a few minutes later and told us she had tasted it and it was delicious. Basically, she was calling us liars and, of course, she didn't reduce or remove the item from our bill. The whole experience left a bad taste in our mouth in more ways than one.
The best Shanghai food in the city run by the nicest family in the business.
I was on a hunt for soup dumplings in Winnipeg over the holidays and found this place.
