"Generally we try to sample a range of restaurants when we are in a new area, however in this case the Restaurante O Caldeirao was the nearest restaurant to our hotel and after the first meal we decided to go the next two nights also. Why, when I talked to the owner he said “we don’t have a chef, we have a cook”. That’s the strength of this place, Portuguese products, cooked simply with good olive oil and garlic, good local wines, a pleasant and friendly atmosphere produces superb food that reflects the best in home cooking but taken to restaurant standard. The prices are good for the area, the owner speaks excellent English and is happy to advise and direct your choices with a great deal of flair and expertise. Try from the dish of the day menu in particular, a depressing trend in the dish of the day is to shift aging produce, here however the dish of the day is what is available fresh and new to showcase the cooks skills. When we return in July we intend to drop in again to see what’s new and delicious – a worthy restaurant to add to my list of “visit again” places."

"We should have not when we heard the microwave ding, and given we were the only customers, it was for us. My husband ordered a barely edible pizza, and my cheese omelet appeared to have been made with moldy cheese. I showed the waitress the neon blue-green streaks (it was NOT blue cheese) and she shrugged it off, claiming it was a stain from the purple cabbage. It seemed more like mold or even a chemical or other exposure from improperly prepared food. I refused to eat it and risk my health. While this place was listed in the Rick Steves guidebook, clearly there has either been a mistake or change in ownership. Regardless, do NOT eat here!"

"We stopped here on several occasions for coffee, always good and reasonably priced. On the last day of our holiday we stopped for a meal and wished we had tried it on the previous occasions too. The chicken meal was gorgeous, as was the sausage meal and more reasonable priced than the restaurants within the walls of Obisbo castle. The staff are friendly and the ice cream is also worth trying, again more reasonably priced than within the walls of the castle."

"I was looking for a good place to lunch. in the walls the prices were high and restaurants empty. I dared before the walls and to my joy found this beautiful restaurant. the service was excellent and the prices slightly lower than those within the walls. the name of my server was telmo and he ensured that I enjoyed the local kitchen."
