"My first visit to Tangier Lounge was a pleasant one. A friend and I got turned away from Soussi across the street, so we decided to stop by here. The service was prompt, the staff was pleasant, and the product was satisfying. Of course, because of this, we bring more friends over we 've found a good thing, so why not support? Well, I must say that Tangier Lounge disappointed me to the extreme on my next visit we had a party of nine people, so we ordered three shishas. Some friends ordered some water, one ordered a soda, and another ordered juice. We went on, enjoying the atmosphere, and our waiter (who was a nice guy brought us the bill. We reminded him that we hadn 't received any of the things we 'd ordered, so there was no reason for us to have the bill. He responded by saying that it was a new policy that customers pay before they 're served because they 've been experiencing a few cases of 'dine dash. ' With several of us having experience working in restaurants, we understood, but were still reluctant to pay before receiving service. After a short discussion at our table, we decided to just go ahead and pay; we came out for shisha, and if it was a store policy, we assumed it would be applied to everyone else as well. NOT THE CASE! As we sat and waited for our order to be brought to us, a group of gentlemen walked in, ordered, and had their order brought to them with no bill. At this time, all we had on our table was the beverages we ordered. I politely asked if they had paid for their order yet, and they oblivious to our situation said that they hadn 't. Immediately recognizing this unfair standard, we asked to be refunded because we did not want to support this blatant racism. (If you haven 't guessed by now, my friends and I are black; the group of gentlemen who were served were white. We asked to speak to the owner, who could not give us a valid reason why 1 we were the only people who had to pay for our order before receiving it, and 2 why we could not be refunded. I will admit, tempers were raised in my group of friends; unfortunately, the owner responded with the same temper, which I was not expecting at all. I chose to become the mediator of my friends ' interests and talk to the owner on our behalf, which served to no avail. By this time, one of my friends stepped outside to speak to Metropolitan Police, who kindly walked into the lounge to help mediate the situation. When MPD entered, the owner removed the beverages from our table, now claiming that we hadn 't paid for them yet. When MPD asked if we had, I presented them with the bill: $50.59. I then gave him three credit receipts at $10.00 each, totaling up to $30.00, and I showed him the $9.00 in cash we received as change from $30.00 in cash that we gave to cover the remaining totals that were not covered on the cards. The question we presented to MPD was, if we hadn 't paid in full, why do we have change? MPD explained to me that this was not a legal but a civil matter, and that I should take it to 300 Indiana Avenue and log my dispute with the office, which I have every intention of doing. We left the establishment no service, no refund, and a horrible experience. In closing, I know that I, nor any of my friends, nor any of the Howard University community, will support Tangier Restaurant and Hookah Lounge any longer. I hope that those reading this review will at the least take my experience into consideration before taking advantage of this establishment again."
