"Really this place visited for brunch on Sunday, 20th august 2017. eating was absolutely beautiful, we both had the Asian garnalate that was full of taste and so fresh. we stayed for a glass of wine and a disc of the most amazing carrot cake when we felt so chilled. the staff, the service and the atmosphere could not have been better and the intention was also simply beautiful. will definitely be visited again. Thank you!"

"Had a meal here with my hubby on a Saturday night the food was lovely, staff ok but small portions served and with my love of Indian food in many Indian restaurants was overpriced, sorry I would not return or recommend ."

"First (later) lunch after several evening meals and it was just as good. fast service and great food that is composed by the amazing flowerpots from all 20 yards from the source. only had baguettes today, but the bark was superb and the horseradish was top notch. service with a smile and very courteous after what I was imaging was a long day!"

"I met a friend here on my first trip to winchester. I found the name of the pub in a lonely planet guide and decided why not as it was quite centrally located in our hotel. my wife and I came to our surprise. the place was full of tensions. in what seemed more like a circus page exhibition exhibition exhibition than a pub, a large selection of real ales were on tape prominant. the bar was friendly enough, and a little sarcastic if they want to give him a quip. we chose to sit outside and smoke our pipes and there was no less entertainment inside. each round leads us back to the bar and a short chat with david. we have mentioned that there is a lot of black this or that around this particular corner, and he mentioned that was because they all have the same owner. I mentioned a lack of creativity in the designation (in a pretty beige and wange) to which he laughed. he is the owner! all in all, a great pub, with a lot of atmosphere and great taps. closes until we were there, and was not in the hurry to throw us in definately a place to stop for a pint and say hello!"

"Overall I enjoy The King Alfred in Winchester and find myself going back. The food sometimes is hit or miss, depending on what you order. Recently I have enjoyed the quinoa salad, the falafel salad and the Chalk stream trout, but was unimpressive with the cheddar/chutney sandwich that had shredded cheese instead of thin slices and not enough chutney, £7.50. The spiced falafel green salad bowl consisted of broad beans, spinach, wild garlic, buck wheat, honey/ mustard dressing, £13.50. The curried quinoa vegetable salad included delicious grilled halloumi, £13.50 The Chalk Stream Trout, samphire a seasonal delicacy) , sautéed potatoes, teeny tiny brown shrimp chive cream, £17.50 was tasty. Service is average, a 10% service fee is added automatically to your bill. Vegetarian and gluten free options are clearly marked."
