"This is the restaurant everyone appears to go to for La Pignata. The large pignata with lamb could feed two after an antipasto. It wasn’t our favourite dish during our travels in Puglia. The service was efficient, friendly and cheerful."

"It was a cold winter night with nary an open restaurant on Befana Eve in the snow-covered Matera 6. December, Befana, is the morning where children wake up in Italy to present brought by the legendary witch. We stumbled over Osteria Malatesta Malatesta Malatesta Malatesta is an old Italian Rimini family name and literally means bad head or crazy, while we went down a back road towards the Sassi di Matera Old Town UNESCO site where it seemed to be more action and open shops. The place was full with the exception of an open table and the two servers ran around to take orders and deliver food when we arrived. We were glad to be in a warm room and from the uncharacteristic bitter cold in southern Italy. The server told us that the table was reserved, but there were seats on the tavola degli amici table of friends, a table for eight, where a young couple from Puglia already sat, a forest Ranger and his wife a Carabinieri state police. They invited us to them, not as they had a choice, and were very friendly and friendly. For our antipasto we decided to share the Formaggi cheese, olives, salad and salami with fresh bread. For €8, the plate was a little spicy with three small triangles of local cheese, about 9 10 green olives and four slices of salami. I think 4 to 5 € would have been a reasonable price. A liter of the local red house della casa wine was much cheaper to € 4.50 and was pretty good. For our entrees we decided to go light and only order pasta no meat course . My wife went with the local Cavatelli in a Pesto, Gorgonzola and almond sauce €8. The part was of decent size and the sauce rich and tasteful. The combination of Pesto and Gorgonzola was unique, but they pulled it pretty well. I wanted to try a local dish and the server recommended the Orecchiette Cruschi e Mollica Fritta €8. Cruschi are sun-dried Italian peppers with seeds removed, cut or comminuted in tiny pieces, then roasted in olive oil to crispy. The olive oil and paprika are then added to the boiled cavatelli, with roasted bread crumbs. It was quite different than any pasta dish I had and tasty enough, but there are many more sauces I prefer. The tavern was old with large arched stone ceiling, a bit simple, yet inviting. The tables and chairs were old and wood with candles burn on all except ours. The service was efficient, but as cold as the air outside, hardly talking to us until we left and I told them I was a food critic. They all smiled and treated us like old friends... too late. CombatCritic gives Osteria Malatesta 6 bombs from 10... More bombs are better!"

"The location is very nice, the attentive, friendly and kind service. I expected higher quality raw and milk fior, good pinsa rectangular pizzas. Great purple beer. prices a little high. We didn't even get the bitters."
