"For a foodie like me who loves finding the better version of the foods I've already tried, eating out can be such a disappointment if a restaurant doesn't meet up to my expectations but it's always a delight when I discover a new favorite. In the case of Milky Way of Malate, I would have to say that some of the foods did not really stand out while some were worth eating again. Our group visited this small restaurant in McKinley Hill for lunch where we had fried bangus, pinakbet, kare-kare and lechon kawali. Both the fried bangus and lechon kawali tasted average and their presentation was just normal considering their price. I have tried the same quality of dishes for a lower cost in other Filipino restaurants. I loved their kare-kare because the pork pata was gelatinous, the slices of tripe were cooked tender, and the vegetables were half-cooked. The shrimp paste or bagoong was so good, it made the kare-kare very appetizing. I appreciated that they cooked their own bagoong for the kare-kare instead of using bottled ones. The pinakbet was my most favorite among the dishes we ordered because it has just the right amount of alamang (fermented krill) for flavor and the vegetables were fresh and crisp. It's so good that I ended up eating a lot of rice with just the sauce of the pinakbet. For the drinks, we had dalandan and calamansi juice which I loved because they were extracted from fresh fruits and not from concentrates. The highlight of our lunch was the two scoops of ice cream for dessert. I had avocado and ube (purple yam) ice cream which were so creamy and smooth. My friends had cheese ice cream which was actually better because the saltiness of the cheese balanced the sweetness of the avocado ice cream. Will have this pair on my next visit."
