"We tried this restaurant for the first time and liked it. the dishes were cheap and beautiful, for example, the satay sticks were huge and moist and the satay sauce was nice; the barramundi fish was fresh and well cooked. the service was good and the speeds quickly came out (maybe too fast.) will be back."

"Indonesian food is completely unpretentious and practical. There's no great attention to plating and the actual cook itself can be very simple. The regional diversity of the food, the textures, flavours and cooking styles are a completely different ball game. Sambal chilli that sizzle, the sweetness of Javanese cooking or Padang food that can sit on a restaurant windowsill for a week and still be delicious - these are just a few of the cooking philosophies in a country comprised of hundreds of islands that dates back to the third century.Shalom does a great job of representing the diversity of Indonesian food and it is common to see westerners eating here. Shalom has Halal certification - the chicken is lean unlike the caged and factory fed chickens we ordinarily eat in Australia. The menu is incredibly complex with a massive compliment of dishes an drinks - anyone who has travelled Indonesia and sampled the diversity of foods will trigger nostalgia here. The restaurant is clean, tasteful and the staff friendly and responsive. Outdoor dining is available although it pushes up against the always busy Pinelands car park. Which will provide an authentic Jakartan dining experience.Be warned though. The gloves are off here when it comes to chilli heat and unlike other restaurants that dumb down their dishes to western tastes, Shalom don't hold back. The house sambal is a five on the richter scale. so make sure you have a glass of Cendol close at hand- just in case.*Cooking Styles*Goreng - FriedBacem - MarinatedOseng Oseng - quickly stir friedSoto, sup, - soup (there are a lot sub types under each)Kari - curry*Ingredients*Nasi - RiceMi - NoodleAyam - chickenBebek - duckIkan - fishKambing - lambTahu - TofuTempe - a 'meatier' under-processed tofu with a distinct flavour and textureSapi - beef although Rendung is a more widely used term as it's almost exclusively a beef dishBabi - pork (use the word carefully as it is also used as an insult!)*Drinks*Cendol - Rice flour jelly with green natural coloring from pandan leaf, mixed with coconut milk, shaved ice and palm/brown sugarJus Alpukat - avocado shake served with a chocolate syrup - highly recommended on a hot dayKopi Tubruk - local coffee with the ground coffee spooned into the cupTeh - tea"

"My son and I came to this restaurant after wandering around Chinatown. As walk-ins we were really pleased with the food. We had the beef ribs with bambbu Bali sauce and chicken satay with satay sauce. Both were delicious. Also, they serve everything with a...chicken broth which was really tasty. We would come back and probably will soon."

"Shiok is located on Kingsway between Victoria and King Ed. The manager met me at the front door which he pushed open with his window squeegee on a pole! I popped my heel behind the door and we had a brief friendly but physically distant conversation about how crazy all of this is. I then picked up my bag of carefully organized treats off the table placed across the front door and went on my way! So efficient and safe! Once we got home, we started the exercise of organizing things on plates to make them look tasty! This was not to difficult with the Nasi Lemak one of our favourite snacks with crunchy fried anchovies and peanuts over rice with shrimp paste, sambal and some cucumbers. This was a tasty bargain at only $4.95.Shiok has a number of small items listed as 'Snacks ' that are quite small portions but not too expensive so you can try a bunch of things..., more or less tapas style. For example, we tried Otak-Otak which I had never heard of before. This was spicy minced fish cake grilled in banana leaf and I loved it! Salty, spicy and a little bit fishy.I admit that its almost impossible for me to pass on Roti Prata when it is on a menu. This was excellent even after a trip out to the valley. Flaky roti and a nice curry chicken dip.The Jook was also very good. It is a lot like Marie 's Arroz Caldo although she uses more ginger which is fine with me. This dish was rich and filling and with a decent amount of tender chicken. To this day, I have not fully come to understand the allure of chicken rice but this version was actually quite good. The chicken was moist and the rice was flavourful, slightly gingery and with just a touch of sesame oil. Finally, I displayed my weakness for Beef Rendang. Coconut curry might be my favourite flavour for anything and the beef had been slow-cooked and was moist and tender. Another winner of a dish. When I first looked at our $50 order, which all fit into one bag, I felt like maybe we were paying a lot but the reality is that was another meal which stretched into two for both of us and left us full twice. So very good food at a decent price.I didn 't get much of a peek inside as the dining room was behind closed doors. I hope we will see it one day soon."

"Wonderful find whilst on our South Coast roadtrip. Cedic was waiting and Sheena was outside serving some wonderful food. No drinks licence but BYO. The mango kerabu salad was sharp , salty and sour just missing the crunch of the crushed peanuts.the chicken in pandan was moist tasty thigh chicken. Beef rending slow cooked beef chunks. Could imagine beef cheek working well in rendang. Very tasty is the aubergine brinjal soft and smokey. Roti telur as well to share, over excited wanting to try everything. No room for dessert but took a toasted coconut ice cream back. Highly recommended for authentic homecooked food"
