"Bethune's Bistro looks like it's been going strong since the '50s and nothing much has changed. It may have a fancy "Bistro" in its moniker but this an old fashioned North American diner that would be just at home in NYC. Just don't ask for a cafe latte. Instead there's filtered coffee that keeps coming fast enough to please Jack Reacher. The menu is high on pancakes (stunning), eggs (wonderful), bacon, chicken, soups, and great old fashioned chips and the short-order cook keeps it coming from the swing-doored kitchen. Great value for money, too. Old album jackets of ancient artists such as Mitch Miller decorate the walls but in a nod to modernity the bar has been built cunningly from split firewood. The guy who takes the orders is as laconic as a long distance trucker but don't confuse reserve for rudness. He just gets on with the job at hand and can stack more empty plates up his arms than a forklift. Places like this should be awarded a medal for no-nonsense service to hungry travellers."

"So---when your on Hwy 169 heading north out of Gravenhurst make sure you stop for a blueberry milkshake. You won't be disappointed, believe me....thick, creamy and delicious. Just remember that they're seasonal----end of June till just after Labour DayWe usually stay at the Marriott right across the street so we walk over and grab a shake.Their blueberries are true "wild" blueberries---the small ones with the huge flavour. When we ran out, we went to the grocery store back home. When our son went into the fridge to get some berries for cereal and tasted the store bought stuff he asked.."Hey--where'd all those good ones go?"....No kidding. Taste you won't believe, but be prepared---they are all hand picked, wild ones so they're not near as cheap as the store bought "farmed" berries, but the flavour is so intense you won't believe it.They also have home made butter tarts and fresh sweet corn in season. Both are really cheap compared to others in the area. If you're lucky enough to be up there on a Wednesday, be sure to visit the Gravenhurst Market at the fair grounds just around the corner (they have a stall at the market too).In short----this is a great, family run stand and any of their product does not disappoint. Ask any of the locals---they'll tell you the same thing. Not abosolutely sure, but I think they've been selling berries from the same location for 50 years or thereabouts..."

"We went there Friday July 28 for early dinner, as we had heard how good their fish and chips were. It was not busy due to the time of day. As soon as we walked in the woman at the counter said hello. We went out to the front part which overlooks a nice lawn and the lake. We had the fish and chips which came with a small coleslaw. They have daily specials, which was fish and chips on Friday. The service was good and the waitress Maria was pleasant and attentive. We enjoyed having a meal there. They have a good menus of many choices also and are licensed also."
