"I 've eaten the street food at The Towpath many times (the best was the pizza marinara, which was so good I had to have two), but last night was the first time we 'd tried the pub 's own short menu; and I 'm very glad we did. I can still taste the wild garlic sauce and the preserved lemons! The wild garlic grows rampant locally, so they dry it and use it the year round. HOWEVER, I should emphasise that The Towpath specialises in locally sourced dishes, and the menu is highly seasonal; the delicious broccoli dish I had back in July 2021 is no longer on the menu at the time of writing (October 2021). So, do check what 's on the current menu to avoid disappointment. There is a good wine list, too, including a viognier from the Loire. The beers are from Felinfoel of Llanelli, including Double Dragon and IPA: in the summer, they serve Cwrw Haf (summer ale), which is probably Felinfoel 's best. However, be warned: I asked for a pint of Cwrw Haf, and was given a half. Reminds me of the Lawn Mór/lawnmower joke in Flann O 'Brien 's The Dalkey Archive. A brief mention for the music, which is from the chef 's mixtape, and highly eclectic: everything from contemporary New Orleans marching bands to jazz rapper Guru to Orlando 'Cachaito ' Lopez 's modernist take on traditional Cuban rhythms to the young Chet Baker 's airy cool jazz. Incidentally, if you are travelling on the Brecon Monmouthshire canal, The Towpath is the only pub/restaurant for miles in either direction that 's actually beside the canal: going towards Brecon, there 's nothing before Llangynidr, which is a day 's journey on a narrowboat. So, it makes good sense to stop at The Towpath: if you 're lucky it might not even be raining. This is Wales, after all. SPRING 2022 MENU includes the following vegan/vegetarian dishes: flatbread with grilled broccoli, almond and chilli; risotto with wild garlic and peas (bloody delicious); broad bean hummus, celery and onion seed; new potatoes with dill and butter. Vegans would be well advised to announce themselves as such, in case the chef in his enthusiasm sprinkles a bit of cheese or egg yolk on your plate. PS: I saw a review on Trip Advisor that described the small plates as 'English tapas '. All I can say is that Offa 's Dy ke (NB: please stop censoring this word, Happy Cow it refers to a historic earthwork, not a sexuality) must 've parted like the Red Sea when she journeyed west.
