"We were fraying at the edges by supper time last Thursday and wanted some place not too loud and reasonably priced before going on to our second night at the Bard on the Beach. We'd walked up Yew Street as far as First Avenue and hadn't seen anything appealing in the several noisy places on offer. I had noticed the open front of Thai Basil and its peaceful tiny interior as we'd walked across the road from Kits Beach and so we returned to it. I didn't realize until I came to write this review that it's one of three Thai Basil restaurants in the Lower Mainland. It had the friendly, helpful staff and rich, flavourful curries that I usually associate with an owner run place. It also had nice touches like several jugs of cold tap water and cups so you could serve yourself. And the prices are great. The entree special for $9.95 is your choice of curry, a decent helping of rice and a small, mouth cooling serving of iceberg lettuce salad with a sweet dressing. I very much enjoyed the rich red Penang curry with ground peanuts, lime leaves and sweet, cooling lychee nuts. My dining companion had a slightly spicier full flavoured green curry with eggplant chunks and basil. Missing my vegetables, I ordered a green papaya and carrot Som Tum salad to share for $6.95 but found it too spicy for my somewhat delicate stomach. I wasn't a big fan of the hard rubber texture of the dried shrimp in that dish either. They didn't seem to add much to the flavour. I noticed that this place is a favourite with families and other locals who came in or picked up take out. While Cornwall Street during rush hour isn't the quietest place to be, the Thai Basil exudes it's own sense of Zen and is a very pleasant way to eat good food nearly on the beach."

"Couldn't fault our meal here.Both our dishes were hot, tasty and of good portion. Price was very fair and made a nice change from fries with everything.Managed to find a table to sit at quite quickly which was a bonus. Might be an issue at peak times though. Good choice on menu, would go again if in the same area."

"I was very happy to see chef hung taiwanese beef noodle in the kerrisdale area open. although this is their fourth location, it provides the same qualitatiw high quality noodles as the other standorte. be prepared, however, so many people are flocking in the restaurant due to the increased convenience and accessibility for those who live near kerrisdale."

"It seems like I’ve been waiting pho-ever to try this place out… Okay, go ahead and groan… that was a bad pun. As their name implies, this Vietnamese restaurant is well known for their specialty pho… a fish cake noodle soup bún chả cá . The interior of this place is fairly typical of most Vietnamese restaurants but I doubt that people come here for the atmosphere. When you open the menu which only lists the name Hoang Yen on the cover , the thing that you want to find is the Bun Cha Ca Dac Biet $11.95 for a small aka the Special Fish Cake and Vermicelli in Soup. Seriously, this is one good pho! The broth is quite light but still aromatic and flavourful from the use of fresh herbs. The smooth and tender rice vermicelli noodles are the best that I’ve ever had. With your order, you can also do add-ons such as the Salad Roll $3.25 add-on . It’s a bit typical but I do appreciate how nicely packed the salad roll was nothing worse than a salad roll that just falls apart when you pick it up . I also ordered the Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings $11.50 which turned out nicely as well. It’s kind of similar to Phnom Penh wings and comes with a lemony-peppery dipping sauce. Overall, the food was quite good here and you can tell by how busy it gets at times. Best tips are to avoid the peak rush period and make sure you have some cash on you because it’s cash only here."
