"I go there in my free time but also booked work events there. The manager is great and his food (ask him for his Wähe) is to die for. I love it. I will not only keep going there but will also continuously book work events there. Special place, special decoration and super friendly staff. Great experience for reasonable prices. The summer terrace is stunning!"

"Whenever I go to Basel to give a lecture at the University, I head to the Aeschenplatz because it's one place where I know I can go home again. The Hilton might be gone, but Aeschenplatz survives and thrives largely due to the absolute dedication of its owner. You'll be able to tell who she is because she's the one visiting every table, offering a welcome and checking on food. She's a human perpetual motion machine distributing good cheer. And you can eat there! I usually choose from the Swiss part of the menu. I almost always eat hackbraten, a bit like a meatloaf, with green pepper sauce and spaetzli, small dumpling like delights. But sometimes I'll slip over to the American side and have a taco salad fresh and wonderful. I also always meet friends there. Some of them have been going there for over 20 years; I'm working on it. It looks inside like a beer hall with wide open spaces and beamed ceilings. The walls are art full. In the good seasons you can sit outside in the front and watch the crazed traffic at the Aeschenplatz, or you can retreat into the inner courtyard, where summer seems light and welcoming. If you visit Basel and want to step into a little bit of cosmopolitan Switzerland, drop by the Aeschenplatz. If you live in Basel and haven't been there why not!"

"Cozy and warm atmosphere. Friendly and attentive service. The menu comprises traditional Swiss dishes (for meat lovers) and also has a selection of nice vegetarian and Indian dishes. Fair prices and good quality. We ordered "Grüner Salat" as appetizer and tasted "Indischer pikanter Lammeintopf" and the seasonal dish "Vegetarisches Wild Spezial" for the main course. The food, both meat as well as salad and vegetables, were freshly and carefully prepared and nicely presented and accompanied by homemade sauces. The homemade dessert - Vanilleköpfli - perfectly rounded off our dinner. The dedicated Chef personally came by for a quick chat."

"The Sorbonne is not the kind of place you just happen to walk by some day, it is a little too well hidden away for that in a quiet suburban side street in Basel. The advantage is that you will always find a table and sitting outside on summer nights is a pleasant and peaceful thing to do.Foodwise, the restaurant serves excellent crispy and tasty pizzas served with a complimentary salad as a starter, good solid pasta dishes, a variety of soups and salads and also a number of Swiss (and other European) standards such as Cordon bleu with fries, Bratwurst and Roesti (very Swiss indeed) or fish with vegetables and rice. To top things off, the owners take pride in their rather special blend of coffee which is quite strong but definitely does them justice. Another specialty of the house is their weekly soup night on Tuesdays when they serve a fresh home-made soup, usually something you don't usually get in a restaurant such as lentil soup with lime juice or some other excellent Turkish variety with an unusual, nicely exotic tang to it. The inside decor, though nothing to write home about, is comfortable and spacious and you definitely don't end up hearing other people's conversation better than your own.Prices are very moderate and the owners, a friendly youngish couple, will make you feel more than welcome at any time. To sum things up, the Sorbonne is a very recommendable place to go at any day of the week, be it lunchtime or night. The only down side to it is that it's only open on week days."
