"On our way from the Ile de Ré to the Bretagne we made a stop in Brem-sur-Mer to visit the cellars of our newest wine disocvery, the Domaine Saint Nicolas (the most amazing wines of the Fief Vendéenne, but that is another story.) We asked for a place for lunch that was open on a Monday and were directed to la Chaize gourmande with a warm recommendation. We drove the 5 km to the little village of la Chaize Giraud and it would have been worth a much longer detour. The ambience is modern and simple but very tastful. The restaurant just opened in April and serves for lunch both a lunch Bistro menue for EUR 17 for 3 courses (EUR 13 for 2 courses) but also the gastronomique menue at EUR 25 for two courses and EUR 29 for three courses. We opted for the regular menue, starting with various choices for appetizers, including most tender langoutines on a puree of peas with marinated vegetables and, for a very modest supplement of EUR 2, foie gras with onion chutney (confit) and toasted bread. The foie gras was not the first but by far the best we had in France during our trip this year. Simply perfect. The main courses featured a line caught pollock and a filet of duck, each with a wonderful medley of perfectly cooked vegetables and delicious sauces (just a bit, not too much.) It is an innovative modern and light cuisine, all presented beautifully on dark plates. We just opted for one dessert and picked the one dish that is not home made in this restaurant, the sorbets and ice cream. They get them from a local artisanal ice cream maker and they were exquisite, while chocolate ice cream and sorbets of lemon/basil and rasberry/rose/lychee. If I were a Michelin tester I'd put up la Chaise gourmande straight away for a Bib Gourmand, and not one at the lower end for that matter. There is only one thing we regret and that is that we were only passing through and could not take this restaurant with us."
