"We wanted to have Calçot,a kind of green onion from Valls, Tarragona in Catalunia. According to wikipedia, this is a registered EU Protected Geographical Indication. Calçot is only available from November to April and we were just hitting the tail end of its availability when...we got to Cal Ganxo. We actually went to another restaurant in the center of Valls but they had ran out of calçot that's why they sent us off to Cal Ganxo. Calçot is grilled over fire and wrapped in newspaper for serving. One then strips the long-stemmed onion and pulls out the white bulb. The white portion of the bulb is dipped in some kind of sauce before it is swallowed with relish! What follows is grilled meat beef, lamb or chicken and, of course, red wine. Cal Ganxo has no menu and the staff can barely speak English but their service and hospitality were superb. Although we had a hard time finding it due to new roundabouts, it was worth the time getting there. We will be back next calçot season!"
