"Very disappointing dinner, not at all French and less-than-average in taste/ quality. Bad enough to spur me on to write a review. I had the duck à l'orange, which was way too sweet and tasted like an entire jar of cheap marmalade had been dumped on the overcooked duck. My partner had the ravioli, which wasn't as bad as the duck, but definitely not worth the price. The kids shared the John Dory fillet but the kitchen was out of John Dory so we got snapper instead, and while it was meant to be a fillet, there were many bones in it - if it was meant to have bones, it would've been nice to have been given fair warning especially since the waitress knew that our kids (aged 9 and 2) would be eating it! We were initially told that the fryer wasn't working so they'd have to replace fries with mashed potato, but ten minutes later we were informed that the fryer was working after all... The fries were severely overcooked and tasted like frozen fries hastily fried up. All in all one of the worst dinners I've ever had for the price. This place is in a brilliant location; it needs a massive makeover, a new maitre d', and new chefs who can actually cook authentic French food."

"I have been to Hollyhock a number of times as I am a Port Melbourne local. As always, the food is sensational and the steak literally melts in your mouth. The atmosphere, pricing and position of the restaurant is excellent, however the service really lets it down. I sat there for 15 minutes before asking a waitress if I am supposed to come to the bar to order a drink (as no one served me they then came out with the food and didnt ask if we wanted another drink, and then after the food we asked for more water, she bought the bottle over and saw we only had 1 glass (as she poured the water! and didnt ask if we wanted a second glass. This is the same service we receive each time which is extremely frustrating. As an owner, they might like to know they are loosing business due to their staff's extremely poor customer service. I would have spent an extra $50 on drinks, had I been asked if I wanted one."
