"As I get older I get less interested in eating at chain restaurants, so when we 're on a long drive we usually have to go a bit afield from our track to find an original spot. Shafter is a little farm town a few miles northwest of Bakersfield, and the only way you 'll find it is to drive to it on purpose. But the drive is through lush almond groves, and ends in a little downtown like something preserved in amber angle parking, brick storefronts, no chain anything only now, re cast substantially en Español, the language of the people who are doing all the work. It 's a delight, in other words, and we chose El Michocano among a number of other places to eat. The restaurant was delightfully air conditioned, which is an issue when it 's 104º outside. It was quite crowded at 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon and we were lucky to get a vacant table, which is always a good sign in a restaurant, and the clientele was 80% Mexican, which is the best sign you can hope for in a Mexican restaurant. Only here one can still sample Coca cola as the gods intended it to be made, as well as Pepsi or even Squirt, all in glass bottles and totalmente Hecho En Mexico with azucar puro and not siropo de maiz. The service was friendly and personable, and the food was simply terrific. We ordered a varied mix of tortas, enchiladas (cheese, chicken and beef), and the macho plate 3 way combination (taco dorado, enchilada, chile relleno) plus a side green salad and a full on enchilada salad. Every dish was done nicely, and even the rice and beans were a pleasure to munch down. The salads were of substantial greens and not just iceberg lettuce as most Mexican restaurants will rely on. The corn chips (we ate 3 bowls) were so fresh as to be still warm, and their snappy pico de gallo and salsa selection was quite good. We mopped it all up while watching El Futbol on a large (and, gratefully, muted) TV screen over on one side, with Noticias Telemundo broadcast on another muted TV across the aisle. We took our time and were never hurried. The food was so tasty that we did not require a doggy bag. Recommended!"

"I work in Shafter, and occasionally treat myself to El Duran tacos...Best in kern county by far. Worth the drive from Bakersfield. They put a good portion of asada, the guacamole is always delicious...keep it up!"

"Girl that took our order on 6/23/22 was kinda rude and we paid for 3 bottle cokes that we didn't receive and was out of town the next day and came back today 6/29/22 with receipt and they refused to give us our cokes that we paid for plus the food isn't that great and way to expensive. Plus we observed the cook using the knife he had cut food with to cut boxes. Not good"
