"I live in Nayland and I really want the Anchor to be a place that welcomes villagers all year round but it still disappoints me regularly and so tend to chose elsewhere rather than support my local which is such a shame. I've been in the village a long time, and so it's really sad to see the local pub evolve into a pub you are only really welcome in if you are going to have meal (unless you are a hardcore daily regular) The service has improved, and the staff are generally ok and try hard although they rarely know what beer is on. What I really want is to be able to sit at a table outside and just have a drink. Not a deckchair. The last few occasions I've been (after the lunch rush or very early evening) there have been loads of tables available outside without reserved signs on them (on my last visit there was at least 10) Yet we are told we cannot sit on them. I have spent a few hours (and not an insignificant amount of money) on a deck chair whilst these tables remain empty it's difficult to chat to the people around you on the riverside seats, particularly when I've been in a group of 6 or more and . I don't need table service, just a normal table. We sometimes have a meal, although the food is very hit and miss that we tend to go elsewhere now. I've learnt to avoid the specials."

"I always enjoyed the choice of wines at Balls Brothers, the cocktails are good and then we tried the food. A wide selection of dishes offered, it is very loud when it gets full and the service takes longer when its busy, but a visit to catch up with friends eating is always good never had any problems."

"Chose to go here for our annual group Christmas get together. Experience was awful from the minute I phoned up to double check the booking to even trying to pay the bill. Utterly dreadful. 1. When we arrived we were shown to our table, not given any menus and had to go to the bar to get attention and order some drinks 2. We waited about 25 mins to get a menu and eventually we're given two menus to share between 8 of us 3. We then had to chase about three times for someone to come and take our order 4. When they eventually took our order we were informed that a lot of dishes were no longer available 5. On clearing the starters the waiter knocked a whole glass of red wine all over the table 6. All main courses were brought out, apart from one, which we had to keep chasing and which was for the one vegetarian around the table. She had to wait until eventually a sheepish waiter came over to inform us that whoever took our order didn't actually write hers down and there was no gnocchi left (the only vegetarian item on the menu). No one was particularly apologetic about this, neither had anyone thought to tell us earlier that there was no gnocchi. The fact she had to sit there eating a small side dish of green vegetables and someone else's chips was unbelievable I can't believe the chef couldn't whip up some pasta or another alternative 7. The catch of the day was a rainbow trout overcooked and inedible 8. We did receive 25% off the bill but only after we pushed the matter no one was that bothered about making it up to us 9. To top it all off we then had to chase them to even pay the bill (the place was half empty by this point) and then they had the audacity to add a service charge to our bill and query when we didn't want to pay it The only time anyone seemed genuinely sorry was when the waiter who took our payments did offer an apology and hoped we would come back another time (unlikely)."
