"The Blue Marlin is one of a handful of restaurants along the Marina at Calheta. Like others, the front of the restaurant doubles as a sales point for "Big Game Fishing" and "Whale Watching", with a swarthy, chain-smoking individual in a kiosk hoping to capture the attention of naive tourists. Returning to the food, the menu varied little from the formula seen elsewhere in the more touristy spots of the island, I.e. a few Madeiran dishes, a few desultory salads, a few fish dishes, lots of meat dishes, and a bit of pasta. My sea bass steak was actually well-cooked but the accompanying salad was basic. My partner's penne with chicken and pesto was tasty but the chicken pieces were remarkably uniform in size and probably bought in. A bottle of a vinho verde was pleasantly light. Service just about passable but it was clear that the waitress had her mind on consuming another plate of chips."

"We were walking the lavada trails near the reservoir and had intended to go as far as the 25 fontes but the weather closed in so decided instead to head back to the car and came upon the cafe en route. A very welcome relief...from the cold with good selection of hot and cold drinks. My cake was a little old but still very good. We watched the meat skewers coming out for people who were having a meal and were very envious as it looked so nice. Another time we would definitely allow enough time to eat here."
