"Way, way back when, I was a semi regular patron of this chain because I was driving around a lot, and it was food I could eat on the run; I love donuts; and I was told it had some of the best coffee. The best coffee shite never moved me because well, I don 't drink coffee for the taste. I drink it for that blast of caffeine to the heart. (In the same way I used to drink beer. For taste? Are you kidding? I drank it with shots of Jim Beam, usually in order to ignite that warm little glow deep within my core that...unfortunately...I too many times fanned up into a rampaging, 3 alarm fire that would escalate into a California style conflagration. If there is such a thing as a Guardian Angel, I had one. But enough about my misspent young manhood, and reliving those good...I mean, bad...memories... I love donuts, true, but I soon became disillusioned with the Dunkin variety. My youngest sister labored for a time in the Fair Lawn Dunkin, and she informed me that none of the donuts are made on premises; they truck them in daily from some corporatized faux mega bakery, I guess. Ok, I 'm hopelessly naive, but I never had a taste for them after that. And bagels? Look, I eat them occasionally, but I remember noting in another review of an actual bagel bakery that I patronized on an occasion or 2 that I never quite understood the enormous appeal of them they 're filling, yes, but they 're about as tasty and satisfying as eating excelsior. What 's changed at this late stage of the game? Hard to say. This is the same shopping center where I sometimes pick up groceries, as well as my headache medication. I tend to be over here quite a bit, and at some point not long ago, it was lunch time, I hadn 't eaten, and I didn 't want to spend a lot of money or take a lot of time in order to satisfy my hunger. Just what Dunkin was made for! I didn 't need a coffee...2 cups black when I wake up is enough for me now. I ordered a small hot chocolate, a toasted bagel with cream cheese, and a jelly donut. I 'm not quite sure why, but I found the bagel tastier than I expected; it had a refreshingly yeasty quality to it. The donut was pretty lackluster, but it had the sugar I craved (I prefer donuts from actual bakeries like B W in Hackensack, or Sorrento in East Hanover, but they 're usually out of my way, and much more expensive...also, if I 'm patronizing B W, or Sorrento, I can assure you I 'll be buying more than 1 donut; I 'll probably be buying several, along with a few Brownies, a Bee Hive and a Crumb Cake if I 'm at B W, maybe a Cannoli or 2 if I 'm at Sorrento...but I digress... . The next time I needed to stop at Dunkin, it was a bagel with butter, a glazed donut, and hot chocolate. It was convenient, it hit the spot, it didn 't cost a fortune. If I 'm in a better mood, or have some time on my hands, I 'll stop at a pizzeria and get a slice or 2. But if I 'm pressed for time, and just want something semi substantial in my stomach...well, Dunkin serves its function in that regard. If there 's a line at the counter, you 'll probably be waiting awhile; if I see the line, I 'll bypass Dunkin, make my hasty retreat, and resign myself to hunger pangs for the next few hours. I 'm not standing in line for what Dunkin is serving. I still have some vestige of pride! But if there 's no line, I 'll partake. Service is hit or miss, as I guess it always is in a place like this. One time, my order got fumbled, although it was rectified without too much trouble. Another time, I dropped some money in the tip jar...I 'm a little ambivalent about everyone everywhere suddenly expecting a tip, from the gal handing you your ice cream cone to the guy handing you your semi stale Dunkin donut, but I 've never made an issue of it; God knows, I 've had my experiences of working in crummy jobs that didn 't pay a lot of money...and I didn 't get the anticipated mumbled Thanks.
