"It doesn't have a fancy frontage like others in the street it is, as it says in the name, a cafe. However, the food and service more than makes up for the plain surroundings. The staff could not have been more helpful. The food was exceptional. I'm only here for a couple of days and I think another visit is on the cards. If you're ever looking for food on Elm Row /Leith Walk don't pass this gem by, give it a try."

"The food was raised. Many regional influences, rather fish concentrated. Wine pairing completes the experience."

"We were never in the hotel, but jumped into the bar a few times. it is quiet with large sofas, very friendly. but it lacks decent design beer, but eating always looks good. Nice for a quiet drink and a chat."

"It was our very first time dinning here and we'll definitely come back! The restaurant is very small and that make it very special, also de decoration is beautiful. The service is amazing, our waitress was fantastic, very charismatic and charming! The food is delicious, we tried the sharing plate for two which is only for £39. The meet, ribs and chicken cooked perfectly, the salad is very tasty and rice delicious! You can bring your own alcohol (they charge a little bit, depending if it's beers or a bottle of wine). I recommend it 100% if you like meat and also if you don't, because they have vegetarian options. Don't forget to bring some cash for tip out, because is not possible to leave it by card and the service definitely deserve it!"

"The Gurkha Cafe Edinburgh 23/01/2015 A new year usually means setting yourself goals and The Food Club is no exception. We decided to scale a Mountain of Nepalese cuisine at the Gurkha Café. The whole group assembled, some slower than others…. You tell him to be ready by a certain time and he’s standing naked ironing at the window… but I digress. We were seated in the centre of the well decorated restaurant and that set us up for a good meal. As is tradition, a selection of beverage was ordered including, Gurkha Beer, Cobra Champagne, because we celebrate every occasion. Before the starters we got a selection of poppadum’s and spiced onions served with a variety of sauces. Although very tasty… the onions were a wee bit spicy and caused the sweats immediately. The sauces certainly helped cool the pallet the down although the onions were too good not to have again. Service was slow but it was a busy Friday night so that can be forgiven. Between the 9 of us a selection of starters was ordered. This included, tender chicken pakora, Mo:Mo, Aloo Tareko, Mix Starter, King Prawn Lasuni and Piro Kukhura. All the starters were well spiced and devoured pretty quick. The Mo:Mo does take some time which is stated but these steamed dumplings were filled with delight. Main courses and again the service was slow but due to size of the meal a longer break was maybe a blessing in disguise. Like the starters we got a selection. Shaslik, Chilli Garlic Fish, Sheekh Kebab, Prawn Madras Poleko Bhale Kukhura. The mains were very filling but this is to be expected for the cuisine and no complaints were coming from our end. Thankfully due to me carrying an extending fork I was able to stealthily steal a bite from each plate. I personally had Lamb Poleko Bhale Kukhura and this was tender, well spiced and a joy to eat. Everyone was happy with their choices. There were a few mix ups with orders but this was resolved with minimal disruption. We were a bit spoiled for choice with their abundance of Rice and Naan options. The staff served up 2 of each which was greatly appreciated and allowed to sink our teeth into something different. I enjoyed the coconut and pineapple rice and the apricot naan. Nothing beats tearing it with your hands and scooping up the remains on the plate…. Never be ashamed to lick the plate…. even in public. No matter what the circumstances, Dessert is a must. Full to the brim and nearing the peak of our Everest ascent, the waiter took down our order. Again we ordered a selection of puds, Gajar ko Halwa, Chocolate Brownie and Galab Jamun. Unfortunately about 10 minutes after ordering, we were advised there were not enough Brownies for what we ordered so we decided to end the meal. However due to the other starters being prepared we were served with the remainder. This was not included on our bill as a good will gesture and we thank the Gurkha Café for this. The Galab Jamun was soft, sticky and an all round winner. The Brownie that we did was shared out and got thumbs up. Special praise is reserved for the Gajar Ko Halwa. A traditional Nepalese desert made from crushed carrots, milk cardamom. Might not sound the bees knees but I highly recommend it. All in all The Food Club had a great time and would recommend this wee gem for a treat. Valentine’s Day is coming up, what better way to say ‘I love you’ than Spiced Onions, a Big Curry and crushed carrots…. You’re on to a winner. Well priced, great location and friendly warm staff."
