"On route to our next stop on our France Trip 2019. We left the hotel in Châteaudun after breakfast and drove to Beaugency arriving at about noon. We quickly found the amazing Rue du Pont which was a one-way and quite narrow main thoroughfare leading...down to the bridge over the Loire. This road is just beautiful with a stream running down the left-hand side as you head towards the bridge, with any traffic coming towards you. The railings at the side of the stream and many of the houses are garnished with very delightful and colourful floral displays. We stopped for a good coffee in a small bar near the end of this road. After coffee we proceeded a short distance further down, we saw a sign on the right for the Château and took it. The Château is huge but derelict. Then we went further downhill to walk west along the side of Loire, and back around to the Château: via some of the old and very pretty back streets. We then took the route towards the Centre Ville where we found L’Idee. In our research of Beaugency I had noted that this restaurant was ‘the place’ to visit and have lunch. So, that is what we did. There was seating outside, and it was in the shade, tick! It was now just before 13:00 and it was 32°C. We asked a waiter if we could have lunch and indeed, we could. We studied the menu and decided that as we were booked in at a restaurant in Blois that evening that we would have a lighter lunch. The wine we enjoyed was OK but nothing of great note – we had a 500ml pitcher between of us which was enough for a lunch time, especially one so hot. We ordered a main plat of Saint Jacques et Crevettes to share and some Pain so we could mop-up the sauce. This was a great move – the plate was delicious and perfectly cooked. The scallops were seared and coked through so they were soft, tender and a delight to eat. The prawns were perfectly cooked too retaining their moisture and texture. The sauce was made from cream with mushrooms and the ingredients for rest of the plate included peas, crispy lettuce, onions and (believe it or not) strawberries! This plate was a delight to eat and very much enjoyed, but better was to follow. Then the desert of which I cannot recall its name. It was slices of warm cooked apple, in Calvados, with a top of filo pastry, on which balanced atop was a small boule of mint flavoured sorbet. There was also a small serving of Chantilly crème and some swirls of caramel and sprinklings of chopped pistachio. This was served flambéed with Calvados. When you ate the pastry and apple your mouth and nose filled with the taste and aroma of Calvados. It was gorgeous, light, lots of distinct flavours and textures, not too filling and the best desert I have had – possibly ever. I’m not really a desert person but this was a different class, from another planet were all food is made for the love of cooking, for those that love eating. So, what would you do if you have just eaten the perfect desert, well you just order another of the same – and that is just what I did!"
