"Had a truly amazing meal here last week with my partner. Our server was so attentive, friendly, polite, bubbly and knowledgeable and created an excellent atmosphere. The menu itself provided some interesting choices, with meat, fish and vegetarian options (priced at for courses or for courses). In addition to the actual meal we were presented with complimentary hors d’oeuvres (a delicious, smooth mushroom and truffle tartlet and a thin sourdough – almost like a brandy snap with a carrot puree) – both were sublime. If that was not enough this was followed by gorgeous, fresh bread and butter and a cup of creamy, delicious soup. Then, on to the meal to start my partner had the rabbit and Asturian black pudding terrine which was served with a selection of pickled vegetable and prune sauce, whilst I had the Scallops with cana de lomo, cooked to perfection, melt in the mouth. For our mains we both had the duck, which was marinated in soy and honey and executed perfectly and was served with lattice type crisps, red and yellow peppers and pickled walnuts. For desert we shared a crumble and a cheese board. My compliments go out to the chef – a perfect meal which we thoroughly enjoyed."

"Lives locally and visited this pub during my childhood, but only recently began to frequent since joining the poker league every Wednesday. The Horseshoe is a cornerstone of Downend High Street and the local community as a whole, which has continued to strive and develop how many other local pubs have closed. A beautiful welcoming environment with friendly staff and a high standard of presentation, without getting too far from a place you could call your locals. A beautiful selection of beverages from breweries on site and in the distance, a series of purses and tasteful friendly pints, excellent quality food for the price. Make sure you visit this place to keep it!"

"My Partner was to be off-visiting relatives for a few days, early the next morning. Our decision to visit this local Italian restaurant for dinner with wine, was a chance to dine-out to enjoy ourselves before having a spell apart. We had made a reservation...for 21:00, which is a little-later than we normally eat evening meals, but there was a Zoom meeting to attend, and we didn’t expect it to finish until 20:45. In the event we arrived 30 minutes early, but a quick phone-call, to check table availability, meant we were assured that we would be able to take our table on our arrival. We soon ordered a half-carafe of house white: at £8 this a most pleasant Pinot Grigio (especially at the equivalent of £12 a bottle). The restaurant wasn’t very busy, but a group of ladies were ‘dominating’, all being very vocal and all appearing to speak (sorry I mean shriek) at the same time. Worse was to follow when a smaller group of ‘lads’ (in their 20’s to 30’s) took the table right next to us. One lad in particular found everything said, by the other three lads, extremely funny: his booming laughter was uncomfortable for us, and probably other diners. I just cannot understand why people are so selfish to impose their happiness, at the expense of the comfort of others. On our way to the restaurant my Partner asked if I had any thoughts on what I would order, and I said that I fancied lasagne. Then as my Partner thought-on the idea of lasagne also really appealed. At that stage our mains were chosen and thus ordered. I was hungry, so I ordered Polpettine al Fungheto (meatballs and sliced-mushrooms in a tomato and herb sauce) as my starter. My Partner was less hungry and ordered a starter of Prosciutto e Melone (basically melon and Parma ham). The melon and Parma ham was really enjoyed, particularly as my Partner had not eaten this plate in a restaurant “for years”. My Polpettine was served with two bruschetta partially submerged in the quite liquid tomato and herb sauce. The submerged part of the bruschetta had lost all of it’s texture, and was too soggy; whereas the rest of the bruschetta had that wonderful robust texture. IMHO the bruschetta should have been served as a side-dish and maybe even replaced with small warmed crusty rolls to soak up the generous serving of sauce. The pork meatballs were quite light and pale, having a mild taste; they were pleasant but IMHO they needed to be slightly-caramelised to provide a more-interesting texture and flavour. I used my dessert spoon to eat the really tasty sauce, as it was too thin to adhere adequately to the meatballs. IMHO this dish had most of the flavours, but if the sauce had been thicker it would have better coated the meatballs. The dish was still very-much enjoyed, but it could have been even better. The mains arrived all bubbling-hot and covered in melted cheese; it looked really appetizing. It was almost too-hot to eat, so small mouthfuls in-between wincing at the heat, and yet another bellow of laughter from the neighbouring table, we progressed slowly with our meals. To be honest it just wasn’t the best, and I finished about two-thirds of my dish. When our waitress came to recover our plates, we both said that it was not as good as we had expected. The duty manager (the owner’s Son I believe), and then the owner himself showed concern and explained what had occurred during the cooking process. Hey, it happens to all restaurants I expect, but we were disappointed, but at least our observations were listened-to and, we hope, passed onto the kitchen. We did ‘do dessert’, with both of us enjoying a splendid Tiramisu, but we didn’t have coffee. On presenting the bill we were given a limoncello each, but my partner, who had already consumed wine, was driving, so I drank both glasses."
