"Luckily it was to visit a melbourne cup lunch in the mill hotel this year. can't wait for next year. the whole afternoon was fantastic. the menu was well built and eating was exceptional. the biggest winner was the slowly cooked lamb. Service employees were...big and overall a large space for a function of this kind."

"Chicken Kingdom was a godsend of a discovery for myself a few years ago when I was a student at University of Western Sydney’s (now Western Sydney University) Bankstown campus at Milperra, given the terrible excuse that passed for food in the cafeteria at the campus. It didn’t take long for me to decide that getting lunch out every day was basically my only option (short of making my own sandwiches), and along with the sandwich shop and the Thai Elephant, it allowed me to remain well fed whilst studying. I haven’t been back since my Uni days. Let’s face it, short of living in Milperra there ain’t a whole lot of things to do in the area. However, I found myself driving through one day and felt a bit peckish and remembered this little gem of a takeaway shop and pulled in to see if their infamous Portuguese Chicken burgers were just as good as I recall.

The shop hasn’t changed at all in the ~2 years since I attended the University. The store is still the same selling BBQ chickens, burgers, rolls, and a decent range of 5-6 salads. The TV in the corner is still set to Channel 9, and I’ll always fondly remember them keeping the sound on, with subtitles. I went with the nostalgic classic Portuguese Chicken burger meal with chips and drink. Being the only person ordering, my meal only took 5 minutes to prepare and before long I was presented with the delightful sight of my meal in the good old school style box. The chips were never the greatest chips admittedly, and they haven’t changed. But they’re still decent. Thick cut, almost wedge like chips, that are never quite cooked quite long enough to go fully crunchy, but still retain a good texture despite being soft. The burger however was exactly how I remembered. Deliciously simple, a couple small bashed out filets of chicken breast coated in a simple breading – almost schnitzel like, smothered in a Portuguese peri peri chilli sauce that was dabbed on as the chicken hit the grill. The bun was a simple white floured bun, with lettuce, mayo, a slice of tomato and a Kraft single slice of cheese. All the flavours work extremely well and combine for what is just a great simple chicken sandwich. The chilli sauce doesn’t overpower the tastebuds too much, and the only downside is I wish they’d marinate the chicken in the peri peri before they cooked it, and maybe melted the cheese a little bit more. That aside, it’s still a good feed.

You’re not spoiled for a whole lotta choice in Milperra. But if you’re after a decent feed and burger, you can’t go too wrong with their Portuguese Chicken burger. It’s not that expensive, and it’ll leave you satisfied, and ready to tackle the textbooks, or whatever your adventure in Milperra be!"
