"And because it was recently so beautiful in Herrenberg, we come back – although the weather report warns: “On this stormy Sunday you will best stay home.” This is also the disadvantage of the picturesque pedestrian zone of this old town, which has been listed as a monumental building since 1983: you cannot go further and have to fight for the foot through the alleys in wind and weather. Tübinger Straße shines as a flagship ensemble with typical restored houses and owner-operated shops and locals on the ground floor. The building no. 14 convinces with a decorative work on a sandstone floor, with red roller shutters and friendly sprinkler windows. Until a few years ago the “Café Aurélie” lived here. But obviously persistence was not the second first name of Aurélie. Rather, the tendency towards an artistic ambience is that the current operators continue consistently. Since the end of 2014, the Greek family Samara took over the unique interface between Art Gallery, Pflaumen-Oma-Café and solid dining room under the new name “Café Atelier”. Maybe even enriched with your own creations? On the colorful Murano glass vases hang price tags, portion packs of milk and sugar are offered in small white sausage troughs. However, the greatest artistic treasure is hidden in the cake counter, but further down. On a Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., the place is very well occupied: behind us two older ladies present their relative stories in detail, in the abdomen, a family circle of friends with festive primary school children is occupied by several tables, between a somewhat exhausted lonely cowboy, two best friends and just us. Unfortunately, we are already too late for the lunch table that crawls between 12 and 2:00. Shame! The menu offers an interesting crossover between Mediterranean and regional cuisine: Greek pea salad and roasted mules, gyro leaves and pea omelet, croissants and Calamari, Kässpätzle and Moussaka. In the late afternoon there is only the cake buffet. A look is enough: far away from the pleasant convenience bakery there are still real craft to see here. The (chef Despoina Samara conjures every day a variety of delicious cakes and cakes that are wonderful to see and powerfully rich, e.g. a liqueur cake, a high-decked apple cake with walnuts, a firefighter cake (kitchen? with sour cherries, a juicy, very dark chocolate cake. Even those who cannot kiss can enjoy their sight. We choose 1x apple strudel with vanilla sauce and 2x pita with sheep cheese and spinach. The Filoteig of the Strudel felt dozens of times rolled out and ready for hair, the apple and rosin filling should have been dipped with alcohol. In short, the leak develops its fine aroma. A quarter of Greek red wine is very good for the likewise heated pita cuts (we miss loud swarms to ask for the strong, full-bodied grape varieties. Swarms: The initially humble patroness gradually opens her heart and tells about her concern and the efforts to adapt bakery and cooking to the local taste. Pita, for example, always exists and runs, sometimes with fabric, sometimes with minced meat, but best with spinach and feta. With the cakes and cakes, Samara tries to bring first-class ingredients, crafts, decor and taste under one hat. The restaurant was not renamed “Café Atelier” for free. Finally, many of the cake creations are very own works of art. It is simply incomprehensible that some guests can squeeze together at the price – 3 euros per piece. Art is beautiful, but does a lot of work. The “Café Atelier” has opened 7 days a week to 9 a.m., there is no rest day. The ingredients are bought Mondays before the local opening at 12 o'clock. Self-exploitation would call some, but the studio operators write modestly on Facebook: “Our guests are our journey. So far we have been in Herrenberg for 4 years and our regular customers will be a few more every year.” This year we must certainly be one of the new supplements."
