"Decades ago on a cold winter night , while I was staying at a hotel in Jalandhar , looking for a food outlet as my hotel kitchen was closed , I chanced upon a small , dimly lit dhaba in the Bhargo Camp area . It was late and the place was about to close . The lone person who was in the process of winding up , acceded to my request and offered to give me a meal . He said that the Tandoor was still hot and he would be able to give me fresh hot roties . Not expecting anything fancy , I left it to him to choose and serve whatever he preferred . I was served dal makhani , alu paneer and boondi raita - half plate of each . The rotis were piping hot and crisp and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal . The person who served me was Raman Kumar , son of the owner . He even arranged conveyance to take me back to my hotel . I never forgot that gesture and the delicious meal . Thereafter I visited the place a number of times . The food quality was the same , no better no worse . I knew then itself that , given the opportunity , this young man could develop this eatery into something much better . Many years later , on a trip to Jalandhar , driving past the the Bhargo Camp area I was reminded of the quaint little place . On being told , the driver parked the car in front of a fairly sizeable restaurant/ dhaba which was bustling with activity . I was pleasantly surprised to see Mr. Raman Kumar at the main seat catering to a long line of people who were ordering packed meals to take home . Yes , AarKay Dhaba had come of age . The place was clean , well - lit , with neatly placed seating arrangement similar to what one sees in the famous ' Mahesh Lunch Home ' in Mumbai . On another day , I visited the dhaba for lunch with a friend . We ordered a meal , the usual dal makhani , palak paneer , alu gobhi and raita . It was more like home food , not too oily or spicy . The portions were good , rotis were hot . Yes there was a difference , from my first visit when I was the sole customer at that particular hour , the host had all the time to muster up a delightful meal . Now he has a retinue of cooks and a platoon of servers . The place must be serving thousands of meals from dawn to dusk . Food is quite edible , well portioned , efficiently served and affordable . Catering to so many customers means cooking large quantities . This leads to certain compromises in quality and service . But still , the place is better than most and worth an occasional visit ."
