"I'd give this place a 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding down to 3. We came here for Berkeley Restaurant Week. It was a beautiful day in Berkeley, and the patio seating was full so we sat inside instead. We got the chicken gyoza and crab rangoons for appetizers. The gyoza was juicy and the dipping sauce was flavorful. I felt like there was too much wonton and not enough crab filling for the rangoons. The pad Thai was great and you could taste all the different flavors in it. The drunken noodles were great as well! The spicyness level was just right where you could definitely feel the kick, but it's not enough where the heat is overwhelming. The mango sticky rice was okay. Nothing too special. The reason I would've given a 3.5 stars is because we felt the service was lacking a bit. We only really saw our server when she took our order, gave us our food, and brought us the bill. We were not checked on once during our meal to see if everything was okay or if we needed anything else. I also noticed people from the patio coming inside asking for things like extra napkins, more water, to pay for their bill, etc. I don't want to place full blame on our server because it's a staffing issue, but for something like restaurant week where people like us don't travel towards Berkeley often to dine, it's important to make a good first impression so we may come back again."

"Upstart Thai Place mostly student-focused meaning more sugar in the dishes, and Americanized versions of Thai classics, it seems like there was sugar and everything when I ate there last, I might give it another try and see if it tastes a little more adult. This is happening with Thai restaurants all across the United States when they realized it American people often do not appreciate authentic Thai flavors, and have to modify it for the American pallet, usually many more butter, salt, and sugar, and less chili, herbs, and uniqueness. I'm going to give it another try but that's my call today"

"The service here is so nice and kind and the food here is AMAZING. I just went for the first time and ordered the scallion pancake, lemon vegi-chicken, prawn chow mein, thai iced tea, and crab/cheese wontons. Literally every single thing is delicious. I will be coming back again in the future!"

"This is some of the best Chinese food I've had amongst a lot of fairly good Chinese food in the Bay Area. It was flavorful, not too greasy, and fresh. The calamari was tender and battered delicately. The chow fun (though a bit stuck together) was almost creamy, the vegetables still bright green and done just right. The scallion pancake was also almost perfect, though could've used a lot more scallion. Will definitely eat more from Tai San again. And THANK YOU for adhering to our request of no single use plastics--this is a game changer for restaurants!"
