"As we wanted more than crepes and the highest rated 'real' restaurant, the Terremer, was closed, we went for Tripadvisor's fourth highest rated establishment, La Closerie de Kerdrain, for a weekday lunch. We were able to park on the road right outside, and entered the attractive chateau via a pretty garden. We were the first guests and were shown to a window table, well spaced from the surrounding ones. The dining room was lovely, with the pale wooden panelling and antique furniture appropriate to the chateau. We ordered the lunch menu, including a glass of house chardonnay each and coffee, for what seemed a very reasonable Euro 38 per person. The service was impeccable. Following a gin and tonic for me and a cocktail maison for my wife, two courses of amuses bouches followed. The starter (no choice with the lunch menu) was green asparagus soup with egg and shiitake mushrooms; this sounded good, but it was in reality very dull and bland, although beautifully presented. The main dish was gilthead bream with green lentils, leeks and a curious gray sauce the taste of which was as anonymous as the rest of the dish. Dessert was a strawberry tart - the strawberries were good. Coffee was accompanied by petits fours, the best part of the meal. There was nothing really wrong with the menu, but it was boring food. The only extra ingredient used in the starter and the main dish was apparently salt. We were reminded of the type of meal you used to get in tired old English seaside hotels, with none of the innovation and flair of Brittany cooking. Our bill was Euro 95, which should have been a bargain in such a fine-looking restaurant, but appearances can be deceptive and we left disappointed that the food in no way matched the surroundings."
