"TL;DR: If it were anywhere else in town, it might be just another coffee shop. All the way out here, with the freedom to be a factory and to experiment with different modes of coffee this is a whole other world. For any fan of Zarraffa's coffee, you owe it to yourself to come here. It has always been a good head ahead of the competition, and this merely validates it. <br/ <br/ A mere half hour drive from Brisbane's city center, and in a whole different environment we come across a real treat. Right within a big warehouse that was planned to be a big shopping hub, and just adjacent to the local tavern, the coffee giant Zarraffa's has comfortably set up their bases. Being a long way from the hustle and bustle, instead of the usual route of getting it to go, they have made it into a comfortable, and relaxing hang out which is merely the facade for a factory. <br/ <br/ It was a bit after lunch, and my house mate had some business to do Beenleigh to put in some other words. There was still another good hour or two before the operation was due to take place, hence he was biding a bit more time. This was all planned in advance, since he had this on the day's hit list. Going to find a place to get a coffee was a no brainer, yet where he managed to scour out I had no idea what kind of treat I was in for. <br/ <br/ When the chips were down during the great Australian bludge in January all these years, Zarraffa's has been a real life saver. Out of all the coffee chains that are around the city, Zarraffa's has managed to the best quality and most consistently satisfying. That isn't going to continue; instead, it will be transcended into a whole other level since it has gained a huge lot of respect from me with the quality of this outlet. <br/ <br/ About the first thing that will be noted when walking into this establishment is just how spacious it is, both in the floor area and with the height of the ceilings. This gives it a fresh aesthetic, allowing in the natural light Like with the building behind it, the whole affair is a work in progress. From whatever decrepit state it was in last time, they have done it up with polished tiles, plenty of oakwood for the boards, and great quality furniture. You can see the planning going with how everything is sectioned, and that it welcomes happy customers; through the glass doors, the first thing most people will see is the giraffe logo up high on the awnings. After that, through the display window is the busy factory, churning out the product on a consistent basis. That is only the start. <br/ <br/ The coffee shop is off to your left, and is partially a gift shop as well. There is all sorts of coffee paraphernalia, including freshly roasted beans from all across Africa. Go a little further in, adjacent to the glass door where the factory workers enter for a work shift, and they have several comfortable couches. These are semi circular, to gravitate around a small fire (great for the winter months). After that, the tables and chairs are set out more like a cafe with the bar and kitchen being the next landmark in the factory. Whatever else come next from here, I will be interested to see. So far, it is a beautiful environment from the simplicity of the aesthetics. <br/ <br/ I will also give some props to the customer service. We are getting more into the less urban part of the world, where people are more relaxed and become that much friendlier. This is ever evident with waitresses as I have found. It is quick here, and they are always finding a small job to do here and there including gradually clearing the table. Expect the terms of endearment to be coming your way. One of the nicest components is the self service water, straight from a chilled tap all free, even the sparkling water. A small aspect, yet it ties the whole experience together. <br/ <br/ It goes without saying to talk about their coffees first. Think of it a combination of any old Zarraffa's store you could find in town, mixed with the factory showcasing their best brews that are currently on offer, mixed with the experimentation lab. For once, I think I have happened upon a coffee place that will manage to please everyone and this time, I will mean everyone. Without any question, it has got all those espresso based options cappuccinos, macchicatos, simple espresso and the ilk. Whether it be Zarraffa's, Gloria Jeans, or whatever else, there is also that extensive menu for those not inclined for coffee, or might want something more on the cold side. Whatever they are called by name, to me they end up being more or less glorified milkshakes many of them flavoured with coffee. It is not just milk based, but also a few fruity ones as well. You can also get some of the usual offerings from the fridge, the sodas, waters and whatnot. <br/ <br/ The real showstopper to my perspective, is the alternative methods of brewing coffee. More often than not, when a coffee place does this it ends up being one or two unless they really specialise in it. Well, aren't you in for a treat now? They offer the cold drips, all sorts of long peculating methods, nitro blends and air roasting, plus at their bar just a few meters away, they experiment further. How does combining coffee with lager sound? If that is a bit weird, the bar also has beers, martinis, and all kinds of cocktails. This is where the coffee house meets the bar. <br/ <br/ In addition to all those beverages, they also have a decent brunch menu going on. It is more or less a few of the cafe favourites, with some African influence thrown in there. The food is fairly light in tone, not wanting to distract from the coffee. Along with that, they have plenty of cakes and sweets in the cabinet to go along with whatever drink you have purchased. <br/ <br/ It was being kept simple as it could this time, me merely purchasing a coffee. My house mate was the one to indulge in getting something to eat, which from memory was a chocolate brownie. Both of these babies did well together. This time, it was no messing around with the coffee. They knew about serious coffee drinkers like yours truly, and managed to put the black varieties of coffees in to their own section. I got a classical brew, or the Gazelle as they called it. I will say, great touch in addressing the African origins of the coffee beans. <br/ <br/ The way they did the coffee was delicious. The flavour of the beans was really allowed to come out, plus the temperature of the coffee was perfect it was hot enough to keep the flavour in tact, just warm enough to drink without worrying about burning any part of the mouth. The texture was really smooth, and it went down a treat. The chocolate brownie was rich and sweet. It had a thick texture, and was a solid portion. <br/ <br/ I have often stressed that the best places to get coffee are right from the source. Next to traveling all the way to the plantation, it does not get closer to the source than this. For the serious coffee drinkers out there, put this right at the top of your list as in this instance you are reading, and get there at the soonest possible moment. I can guarantee you a fortune that you are not only going to not be disappointed, but instead be blown away by the quality of the brew, as well as the environment they have carved out. <br/ <br/ What might be the trump card above it all is that, if it has not already begun, there are roastery tours planned in the future. That is as of writing. This is the next step from getting people to like coffee, to appreciating the notes and flavours in the different blend, to actually getting an appreciation for the cultivating method. Sky is the limit here, and hopefully many coffee aficionados will follow their nose to the source."

"Have not been back over one year so took the advantage of weekday off work to explore it again.<br/ I was not a busy day at 10:00am. After I looked at the available bean at the counter , I decided to have the Colombian bean for my flat white then took a seat outside to enjoy it. <br/ Although the latte art was slightly let down, the strength was no doubt satisfied my palate. Being a layman, I could taste the raspberry taste but the fruity acidity was certainly there.<br/ Previous rating: May 2019 4/5; July 2018 5/5; May 2017 4.5/5<br/"

"Within a small shopping complex that is wrapped behind and adjacent to the main road in Kingston, this small, modest and unassuming eatery has just recently opened up. Going regional, it offers diners fare that would be found in the Cooks Islands. Some places you just find and here about, and are so different they are worth going to for that alone this is one of them. Taking out the novelty factor, Marlena 's Island Cuisine still has a number of strong legs to stand on. This place is not only popular with the local residents, but it has grown quite quickly into a place that is constantly buzzing with clientele. From an initial glance, this merely looks like a takeaway place. That being said, it does do a lot of take away orders, however if you choose to eat in it is fully stocked with plates, cups, cutlery and everything. This is another place that does well with what it has got, being merely a small square in an industrial area shopping district. All the tables are outside on the footpath. Most of it at this point was one lady behind the counter doing a lot of the work. She was a really gregarious gal who had fantastic work ethic. She really knew her stuff, could discuss what each item was and explained about the cuisine. This is the classical counter service, with the food being delivered straight to the table. Surprises a plenty, such as that, are in store coming here. So, how to describe Islander cuisine? It is definitely one of the simpler cuisines on Earth. A lot of it is slow cooked stews using local produce, taro and cassava are frequent ingredients, or lots of meats and salads. Expect plenty of offerings of seafood, and meat is commonplace so this is probably one place to skip if you are vegetarian. The offerings of the menu are all pretty simple offerings: some basic breakfasts, a few salads, sandwiches and whatnot. It will vary from day to day what they have, so check regularly. Most of the available options are in the bain maries shown, but orders can be done fresh. In the briefest description, this is wholesome fare that is reminiscent of cuisines from the Pacific Islands. Meals here are substantially sized, and could well fill you up for the rest of the day. Heck, they even seem to encourage having variety on your plate and for quite good value. Even after all of this, there is a really good dessert menu. On Thursday and Friday, a few house specials are made available. While you are spoiled for choice here, you don 't get inundated by all the choices it works out well. One mid morning, I was awoken with my dining buddy hell bent on getting here to try out the food. Consider it a weird transition between brunch and lunch, with enough in my stomach at the end to have had both meals. Yes, if it has not been mentioned yet: bring an empty stomach along with you. Starting out, it was the usual coffee orders. I cannot remember what bean that they used with this coffee. Nevertheless, it was a doppio in which I ordered. This was a perfectly alright cup of coffee. Think everything that is needed for a good espresso, and that what was in here: it tasted good, it was the right temperature and it went down a treat. My dining buddy got for his first order a couple of small dishes. One of them was a chicken curry, and the other was a dish called rukau . This was a coconut cream based dish, mixed with a lot of taro and corned beef. The chicken curry was a good one, a bit like the standard kind you think of with the term chicken curry . The spice in it was mild, it had a colourful mix of vegetables including capsicum, and the meat was tender thigh meat. This was a decent, passable curry with a lot of flavour. What really won the day was the rukau. Think akin to a sagwala; heck, my dining buddy was thinking it was spinach in the stew until the waitress told him it was taro. This is a pleasant and simple dish; traditionally it is wrapped in banana leaf, and a mixture of onion, corned beef, taro, and coconut cream is mixed together before being baked in the ground. Some meals you just feel like you ought to try it out at home, and for me this is that kind of meal. The meat is tender, the taro was infused with plenty of spices, and the coconut cream made it smooth. For my order, I got a small bowl of mussels. These were stewed in a coconut cream that was mildly spiced, and it also had the addition of octopus. When it came out, I was in awe at how big it was. And I had to remind myself again that I ordered a small bowl. First, the broth was creamy and infused with all kinds of herbs and some mild spices. Then, the bits of seafood both the mussels and the octopus were tender, sweet and like butter. These are two, for lack of a better description, gamier than normal bits of seafood in general, and I think how they present them here could be a good introduction to them. Divine, and like something people talk about from New England. To go on the side, I got a big order of fries. These were overall quite good. A few might have needed a bit more cooking, and maybe a little more consistency between the overall thickness would do it a lot of justice, however they are on to a good start with them. Readily seasoned with plenty of salt, and piping hot, they proved to be a pretty substantial. Here 's hoping to plenty more of these. After this, it was time to go in for some desserts. These were all very simple, used lots of fruit and the range, just the range is something to be seen. My dining buddy has always been a big fan of trifle, so that was what he got. From a couple of spoonfuls, the whole concoction blended together really well. I got a bit of custard, some sponge cake and a few bits of fruit (peach? . This definitely convinces me how good trifle can be. The one that I got was a banana poke. While this is not traditionally seen as a dessert on the Cook Islands, it was presented as such here. Often it is had as as side dish, not unlike rice or bread in many other cuisines. This is another one that struck a cord, probably because of how different it was to most other fare I have had. So, how to describe what the banana poke was like? It was like jelly, a little tougher in texture to break up, but think of a warmer version with actual fruit used instead. This was put in a bed of custard, and it was simply delicious. I loved the texture of it, the flavour was not overbearing. Actually, on second thoughts this was more like a Turkish Delight and I think it even bests it. Yes, I just said that. After all of the food that I ate, this was proving to be a bit too much at the moment. Taking home the rest of the poke, I had it later with some ice cream and it was just as tasty that way. I really recommend it, and will try the pumpkin variety when it is in stores next time. Marlena 's Island Cuisine might be one of the biggest surprises yet. At most, I expected it to be a decent, maybe filling little place, but the food really took me by surprise. Masquerading as a general take away, I feel it is no exaggeration to say that it provides restaurant quality food, and even down to the service. In full, honest to the heavens above, sincerity, this is one place that I will give the fullest recommendation to try out I can hazard a bet you have not tried many places like it."
