"Late lunch here yesterday with friends. The proprietor, Jesus, runs the restaurant and the front of the house while his son does the cooking, has been known to turn away patrons who don't meet his standards. We had a Spanish speaking friend call to get...us reservations. The cuisine is Spanish rather than Mexican and he offered an interesting variety of main dishes: Cassoulet of beans with five types of meat and sausages, rabbit, catfish, red snapper and pork. You choose the entree and the rest is brought to the table small plate Spanish style. I had the rabbit and it was excellent. Two of our party had the catfish and it got good marks, but the simplest dish, the cassoulet, stole the show for best entree. The small plates came out and covered the table white beans, pickled mushroom, Spanish ham, two milk cheeses and one goat cheese along with homemade breads. Another treat for the oenophiles out there is his house made tempranillo-based wine. Be polite, say thank you nave the ladies flirt just a bit with the owner. My wife called him very handsome and he glowed for the rest of the meal. Not inexpensive but worth the price for the food and the atmosphere."

"We didn’t know it when we made our reservation but Aperi has a new chef. Jesus is working to creat a new menu and to recapture the glory that Aperi once enjoyed but he had some work to do. He is eager and ambitious and I have high hopes for his future. Clear winners were the hamachi crudo, the fresh beets and the suckling pork; the four gras though creative lacked flavor and the sous vise chicken was mushy. The chefs table experience was not communicated well to us; we told the waiter we didn’t want the wine pairing but just wanted to order a single bottle, but we were charged for the very expensive wine tasting nevertheless and the waiter refused to budge on the price. Also the chefs table space would be fun with a crowd but was uncomfortable given that we were the only couple in the large space and it was hard to get service as we were alone in that room."
