"Went in for lunch only because there isn 't anything else in the village. It 's 'funkiness ' is on the grotty side of quirky. Inside there 's advertising for the recognition and equality of people, which is ironic considering how we were treated. Despite a 'vegan food on the menu ' sign on the door, vegan options are very limited. There was a dried up looking samosa in the cabinet. My 11 year old daughter said she 'd be happy enough with that. When I asked an older woman, who I took to be the manager, what other options there were, I was told bean soup with vogel 's bread. Not exactly what I was looking for but we were tired and hungry so I agreed. She totalled it up and said $25.00. I was shocked so I queried the amount. The samosa on its own was $10.00, with a side of salad it would have been $17.00! The soup, with basic sliced supermarket bread, was $15.00. When I said that was too pricy for us, the woman immediately went on the defensive saying it was homemade (wouldn 't you expect that anyway? and vegan. So, the fact her bean soup was vegan, meant it was more expensive. OKAY! (I think any vegan reading this will know the price of a homemade veggie soup! Due in part to the aggression being directed at us, I said, 'No thanks, we 'll leave it. ' As we were walking out she shouted at us, 'There 's a MacDonald 's up the road for you! ' We took her implication to mean that, as we were unprepared to pay for her 'homemade food, ' we were no better than mass produced 'fast food eaters ' who didn 't care about what they ate. I was stunned to the spot. I stammer back, 'I 've never eaten there. ' She pulled a face and carried on serving her next customer. Everyone in the cafe was starring at us. Cuddling my daughter, we hurried out feeling humiliated and abused. My daughter 's been a vegan all her life and has turned down invites to birthday parties held at McD. She was really upset by what had been said to us, as was I for different reasons. So vegans, if you want to be exploited, while eating a very limited menu flavoured with abuse, go to The Perching Parrot. Or head 10 minutes up the road to Paraparaumu, which has a Hell 's Pizza with a range of vegan pizzas for take-out."
