"Too bad I had to pick from 1 to 5. I walked by Las Pencas during the Rosarito Art Festival on May 24, 2014. There was a huge banner advertising a dinner special - a 3-course meal, choice of entrees, margarita, live music and floor show for $13.99. Later that evening, a group of 8 of us decided to try it. Wow - what a DISASTER! I don't even know where to begin. We ordered mojitos from the bar and were told that they had to go to the store to buy mint. So we ordered wine and beer. The wine was terrible (we drink Mexican wine all the time as we have a home in Rosarito Beach). The chips were great and so was the first course - cabbage soup. Five of us ordered the special and three of us ordered from the menu. We never got our "free" margaritas and had to ask for them several times. The pork chop did not even resemble pork. It was kind of like a slice of ham with a pork chop bone, and was about 1/8 in. thick. It was served with ice cold (right from the refrigerator) mashed potatoes. There was NO third course. I ordered the pork chop but I was never served. Everyone else was finished with their meal when I finally asked the waiter to please serve me something - anything. I said I would take the chicken if that was easier. Because it was a bit dark at our table, I did not inspect my plate before taking a bite. The "chicken" tasted strange and I spit it into my napkin. I thought I had taken a bit of skin or fat. The second bite was even worse. I got out my phone and turned on the flashlight. I can't even tell you what the heck was on my plate! It all looked totally disgusting. Not one item was even identifiable. I have travelled all over the world and have eaten in restaurants in China, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil, etc. and I have NEVER been served such a disgusting plate of crap. I took my plate back to the kitchen and told the cook to just forget it. By time I was served, most folks in our group were so disgusted with their food that they, too, were ready to leave. The "entertainment" was a decent enough singer but the "floor show" was a joke. The hostess got on stage and danced while the singer sang for about 5 minutes. Then, the place turned into a karaoke bar with local talent totally outshining that provided by the establishment. When our bill arrived, it was totally incorrect as we were charged for drinks we didn't order and my meal, which I couldn't even begin to eat. We paid the adjusted bill and voiced our complaints with the owner. Talk about bait and switch. If you haven't been to Rosarito, $15 will buy you an excellent filet mignon dinner at La Estancia or a gourmet French or Italian meal with salad, home baked bread, etc. at The Bistro, just a few doors down from Las Pencas, or a fabulous wood-fired pizza and salad at Bettucinis. The food is very affordable in Rosarito, so $13.00 for such an unidentifiable plate of slop is outrageous. When we left, we met another group of Americans who were standing outside the front door. One of the women commented: "You didn't eat in there, did you?" She said that they were there for the karaoke and were warned in advance by friends to never eat at Las Pencas. So, you're in the mood for some excellent karaoke, check it out. Have a margarita and some chips but skip the over-priced slop they serve as dinner!"
