"I’ll be the first to admit that Fu Wah was a definite surprise. This little establishment is another wonderful example of why we should never judge a book by its cover. If we looked solely at aesthetics, we would undoubtedly conclude that Fu Wah is...just another run-of-the-mill Chinese eatery to be passed over because of mediocre cuisine; HOWEVER, if we did that, it would be our fault for missing out on what is – surprisingly – a very high-quality meal at a reasonable price. Fu Wah is a pretty minimalist establishment. The interiors are sparse and, for me, harken back to Chinese restaurants of the 1980s. There’s a bit of signage on the pale green walls, some flowers/plants on the payment counter and that’s about it. Seating is, likewise, sparse. The restaurant houses 5 tables, plus a long bar-type table. It’s clear the emphasis is on two things: Takeout orders and the food. There are no bells and whistles and that’s perfectly okay when you get food of the quality you receive here. On our inaugural visit, my partner and I tried the salt pepper prawns, Szechuan chicken and the Hong Kong-style chow mein. For what was basically a 1-person show (the other owner entered the restaurant well after our order was started), we got our food served hot, fresh and in really good time – just under 15 minutes for all 3 dishes. And, as others have pointed out, the servings are very generous. Now, I’ve been to many Westernized Chinese restaurants over the years and, in my experience, most serve overly large portions to compensate for a lack of taste or quality. Fu Wah serves large portions, but it’s obvious to me that they aren’t compensating for anything. They’re just generous – and I appreciate that. Everything we had was of very good quality. The salt pepper prawns were hot, fresh and had a bit of spice to them; the Szechuan chicken was nicely sauced, came with some nice vegetables to offset the heat and add freshness; and the Hong Kong-style chow mein was most impressive because it came with a variety of items: BBQ pork, beef, chicken, prawns and an array of veggies. It reminded me of “special chow mein” at other places . . . only far better. I mentioned above that part of the focus at Fu Wah is on takeout orders. This is exemplified by the fact that they maintain a decent buffet-style area with many ready-made “hot” items to go. While my partner and I were dining, a fair number of people on lunchbreak came in for a quick “to go” meal. Given the quality of the food, this is not surprising. FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE: 4/5 VALUE: 5/5 RECOMMENDATION: After our dining experience, it’s easy for me to endorse Fu Wah as one of the better places to get good Chinese food on the Westshore. The food is hot, fresh and flavourful. You can tell the owners care about what they put out because they check in on you to make sure everything is okay. That’s just plain good customer service. Now visit Langford Centre and check these folks out if you haven’t already! PS: If you found this review helpful in any way please hit the helpful button!"
