"Whilst in Genoa last month at AC Hotel, we consulted Tripadvisor for a good restaurant in the area. Turns out we were delighted by our choice. We opted for the Osteria della Castagna, a mere few blocks from the hotel. The restaurant is located in a rather dark lane on the premises of a former postal station. It has a rather large dining room and is modestly decorated, with an aquarium chock-full of lobsters. When we arrived at 7PM (a bit early for Italians), the restaurant was empty butt filled up quickly with locals as well as foreigners. An “osteria” is a public place where originally only wine and simple fare are served. Nowadays, while remaining unpresumptuous in their decoration, osterias often serve sophisticated food. And so it was. This osteria specializes in fish and seafood from traditional recipes of the Liguria coast. As we wanted to try different specialities, we opted for a Tasting menu (Menu degustazione at Euro 45 per), which was absolutely delicious, in addition to being good value for money. We opened with complimentary sparkling wine and lightly battered vegetables, followed by an array of colourful and amazing dishes. First were the Antipasti di mare (6 different fish and seafood appetizers), then the Primi piatti: Trofiette di porcini e gamberetti (local pasta with Porcini mushrooms and shrimps); ravioli di totano (squid-stuffed raviolis) and Risotto all’aragosta (lobster risotto). Then came a huge dish with a grigliata mista (mixed grilled fish and seafood comprising of craw fish, prawns, large shrimps, calamaris, sea bass) and finally delectable desserts. The owner, Giorgio Bove visited our table, at the same soliciting feedback on his cuisine. We ended up having a pleasant conversation in Spanish as he spent his early years in Buenos Aires with his family before his parents decided to return to Italy. We had a delightful evening and ate a sumptuous meal. A place to remember for future trips in the region. They say a picture is worth a thousand words.
