"The La Taverna restaurant is located underneath the Hotel Traube on the main square in Lienz. The entrance is down some stairs at the backside of the hotel. Immediately the restaurant feels cosy, warm, and welcoming. It is in the basement of the hotel so...there are no windows but it is nicely decorated in rustic wooden style walls, ceilings etc and there are lots of old black and white photos of Lienz. There are some nice cosy tables tucked away in various corners and the open kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant. The Taverna is an Italian restaurant with all the usual soups, starters, pizzas, pastas, salads, fish and meat dishes that you’d expect in an Italian. There is also a selection of non-Italian dishes to serve guests wanting typical Tyrolean food – signs that this is an Austrian run Italian restaurant. The restaurant is quite small though and there is no bar to sit and have a drink if you need to wait for a table. The prices are fairly typical for Lienz – good value and fairly inexpensive. There seemed to be a large offering of good wine but I guess that this is because the wine list may come from the hotel upstairs. Pizza was very good indeed and big enough to satisfy. Accompanying dishes were of good size and well presented. Dishes such as lasagne looked very much home-made. Menus are in German but there are English descriptions beside each dish. Service was okay with just one waitress to serve the whole restaurant. She spoke good English and did a great job managing the whole restaurant alone but they could do much more to make guests feel more welcome. You can also see the cook doing the cooking in the open kitchen. If you pay by credit card your card will disappear upstairs to the hotel where the transaction is done – not for everyone, especially if you are particularly paranoid about credit card security. The Taverna is open lunch times and evenings from 6pm. For lunchtimes the cellar type atmosphere could be a little too ‘dark’ for some peoples liking but for the evening it’s fine. We found that the Taverna was one of the very few places in Lienz still serving food until late (11pm), so this place would be ideal if you have arrived into Lienz very late and not much else is open. The restaurant is closed on Mondays. Conclusion – a pleasant Austrian attempt at an Italian restaurant which is cosy and comfortable in the evening and serves good value food and drinks until quite late."
