"Dropped by for lunch today, had the chicken rice, laksa and ice kacang. unlike my previous trips, today was a disappointment. The food was simple tasteless. Probably someone dropped the ball today. I really hope that's the case as it would be a shame for a nice establishment such a sedap (tasty) to become tidak sedap (tasteless). Please bring back your food to its former glory. There's only so many malaysian restaurants in Sydney. We need to eat :D"

"Very few Asian/Indian/Thai restaurants actually dare to push out the boat and keep true to truly “Authentic food” in the West.As much as they would love to cook and present Asian food with their original levels of spice and heat levels, the fact remains that they would be then left with only a core group of customers. However the reality is that this group sits on an extreme of the bell curve and is a small number and it is really the moderates, who like the thought of eating at an “Authentic Asian food joint” but can handle only watered down spice contents, that constitute the majority. It is this majority that keeps most restaurants profitable by repeat orders. Why this lengthy introduction? Most restaurants for obvious reasons, prefer repeat customers and so will do all they can to preserve an “Authentic” label, however when it comes to the food, they chicken out and add copious amounts of yoghurt or water or cream to dilute the effect of the spices.Either that , or they just go down the tried and tested route of “Westernising the menu” which means minimal oil/frying/spices.And in the process become boring and bland..Very few actually stick to the original and native formula and keep the food unaltered and it takes a hell of a lot of time to find a restaurant that has the courage to stick to the authentic stuff. This is where Petaling stands out.No fancy décor just basic tables and benches/chairs, no silly decorating or arranging food in fanciful patterns on the plate. This is street food at its most authentic where the ethic is just “Am hungry, will eat” and so there isn’t the time or inclination to discuss food formations on a plate. For those of you who would like to discuss food and appreciate the ambience while sipping costly wine, head to my review on “The Aria” another restaurant, great food and décor. But all ye core food grubbies who actually love to eat crazy fire cracker spiced truly authentic Asian food, go to the Petaling. There is the most delicious meat curry with Parathas and a dozen dishes of fish served floating in a curry base and expect to sweat profusely while slobbering away and enjoying the spicy fish and rice. There is no shortage of choices with the mains and it will take a while to figure out the menu. The only let down is in the desserts.Naturally after eating a shed load of spice and oil the next urge would be to down some desserts.Which are a let down here as there are a few desserts of which I forget the name, but at best they are relatively tasteless and instead of having dessert at this place,I would head outside turn right on George Street and go to one of the cafes and get some chocolate cake. However apart from the disappointment with the desserts, the mains and starters more than make up."
