"'Quirky ' pub on the estate, standing out on Union St for its colourful painted exterior and a ~funny~ ramshackle alternative vibe. Thought it might a refreshing, solid pub for a decent meal that could surprise in quality. Especially with the amount of hardcore-burger-fan burger joints that have pervaded all central spaces, this looked more honest, solid and different. "It's bizarre how certain places in your local area stand out, while others blend into the background to the point they're almost invisible. Perhaps we're drawn to the more hyped restaurants, or maybe it's just down to their decor and whether it chimes with our tastes. Because I've lived in South East London for 2.5 years now and never really paid much attention to Hisar Mezze Restaurant on Lordship Lane, despite passing it countless times. But one Saturday, as I drove past LL's assortment of eateries I've gone to and loved Franco Manca, Franklins, Toast looking to book a last minute dinner, I noticed how busy Hisar was. The others were out of the question, either too busy or a bit too pricy for what we wanted. As soon as we walked in I was happy. It was rammed but they found space for us even though we hadn't booked. It's interior, all stone and wood, was reminiscent of a cosy taverna while the centrepiece, the massive charcoal grill, spewed out beautifully scented smoke that had us salivating from the start. We ordered mixed starters: tabbouleh, hummus, halloumi, and lots of others I can't remember. All lovely. For mains, we ordered a mixed grill of a lamb chop, grilled chicken, chicken wing, lamb kofta and lamb chunks, all done over charcoal and bursting with flavour. Their Original Iskender was also beautiful a lamb shawarma donee with tomato sauce yoghurt, served on pitta that 9ne we finished the beautiful meat, had absorbed all its beautiful juices. Delicious. Too full for dessert, it came to about £70 which was a bargain. A true local gem."

"Here's a great treat of a place if you live or work anywhere near London Bridge or Tower Hill. One of my favourite lunching spots during the working week is a fantastic little shop called Absolutely Starving. I first found it when my university flatmate used to work there during the summer and purposely told us never to come in as he didn't want to be caught wearing the bright orange uniform and hat. Obviously if someone tells you this your going to do it and so we did. However when we arrived we weren't even fussed with him once we saw the amazing array of food on offer here! Absolutely Starving is like an Aladdin's Cave of food, with lots of different options to enjoy for your break from the daily grind. Located just up from London Bridge tube station and a short walk from Tower Bridge this is in a perfect location for a lunch time jaunt. With my office just across the bridge, it is all too tempting to come and feast upon the delicious goods that await inside instead of frustratingly tucking into another homemade salad! My favourtie thing about Absolutely Starving is the amazing hot roast baguettes they produce. The choices are literally mouth watering and I always end up holding up the queue to decide. With options of Chorizo Sausage, Pequillo Pepper Rocket; Salt Beef, Gherkin Mustard; Belly of Pork Apple; or Roast Chicken with Sausage Sage Stuffing, you can see why it's such an important decision. It is prepared in front of you too and to your requirements! If you are not feeling the hot roast baguettes then they do a fine selection of hot soups, toasted wraps and even thai curry, noodles, risotto and pasta! There's something for everyone and what's more, even though they are placed slap bang in the middle of a busy corporate environment, the lunchtime rush is handled extremely efficiently. There is also a delicious array of baked goodies too, to entice even the most disciplined of sweet tooth's. I always fall for the Chocolate Brownie with White Chocolate Chunks. It's perfectly gooey and soft just how brownies should be and more importantly, not a single trace of nuts! You can even pick up a few extras for home whilst your there as their shelves are stacked with preserves, special blend coffee, cooking ingredients and more. I went for my favourite, the Salt Beef and Mustard on a delicious multi seed baguette. I hurried back to the office quickly and then proceeded to gorge on the most delicious salt beef that simply melts in the mouth. I am a huge fan of this fine meat and it doesn't taste any better than when accompanied with some rocket and a healthy helping of mustard, wrapped up in a warm soft baguette. If you're reading this and feeling peckish in the London Bridge area what are you doing? Get down to Absolutely Starving already!! You know you won't be satisfied with that healthy soup or salad you brought from home, pretending to be good!
