"For those of you who haven’t been to the River Market in New West (formerly known as New West Quay), you might be surprised at the quality of restaurants located in this place. In addition to Freebird Chicken Shack, Chef Angus An has a Thai restaurant at River Market that specializes in Thai street food.I revisited Longtail Kitchen back in late November (on 2 consecutive days) and tried some of the lunch specials. If you’re looking to see some of the other food that I’ve had here, check out our previous posts here and here.First up is their Boat Noodles $(12) with beef balls, sliced beef, and crisp pork crackling. The rich and deep flavourful beef broth clung to the rice vermicelli noodles making for a perfect noodle pull picture. The broth had a slight heat to it and the crisp pork crackling added to the textural contrast to the toothsome noodles. The following day, I ordered the Pad Ka Prao $(12) which is a holy basil stir-fry.The free range chicken was stir-fried with crunchy green beans, garlic, and holy basil. And just take a look at that beautifully fried egg on the rice… nice runny yolk porn when you pop the yolk.I returned in late December for their Three Flavour Chicken Wings cooked up with wild ginger, crunchy green beans, baby corn, and jasmine rice $(12).The chicken wings were nice and juicy on the inside as the meat was encased in a flavourful, caramelized coating that was slightly crisp to the bite and sticky as you picked them up.On a subsequent visit, the lunch special happened to be Boat Noodles again but I felt like trying something that I haven’t had here before… hence my order of Mee Goreng $(11).This noodle dish was tasty… mixed in with the rounded yellow noodles were chunks of potatoes, tomato halves, shredded chicken, and crispy bits all coated with a savory sauce. For something a bit more down-to-earth, the simple Stir-fried Gai Lan and Pork Belly $(12) is pleasing with a surprisingly good amount of heat. The firm pork belly chunks had a nice caramelization and the gai lan were snappy to the bite.Generally, it’s not overly busy here but during my last visit, there was a large group of diners that took up almost the whole restaurant. Still, one of the better options for Thai street food in New West."

"Been here three times since it opened about a month ago. Smallish place (can seat 20 people or so but not cramped (could maybe add a table or two? . First time, had the house special sub sandwich (Banh mi dac biet and salad roll for takeout. Salad roll was fine (not exceptional . Sub was your usual vietnamese sub with added beef brisket pieces. Really liked that sandwich (and at 4.50, a steal . Saw this picture on the menu of a reddish soup (spicy beef noodle soup (Bun bo hue that looked super tasty. Promised I'd come back to try it...<br/ <br/ Second time, came with two co-workers. Looking over the menu, I was struck by the fact that almost every item had beef. Not a big beef fan, and the guy (owner, I think seemed to really want us to eat something with beef. We'll okay. I'd wanted to try that Bun bo hue but it wasn't available at the time. Had something else I can't remember (a noodle dish with pork and of course, beef but it was good (again, not exceptional, but good enough . <br/ <br/ Third time, came with about five co-workers. And this time, the Bun bo hue, was available. Had it and it was really good. Not excessively spicy, had all the subtle flavors I expect in vietnamese food. Forgot what everyone else had, but everyone was satisfied.<br/ <br/ Service is good. Prices are not bad. Really hope these guys stick around for a bit; this neighbourhood doesn't have a lot of food choices, and I'd be happy if I can have this soup every couple weeks (or more often .<br/ <br/ <br/ UPDATE Feb 2017: I've been here several times since the first time, and I'm bumping up my rating from 4 to 4.5. Why the average rating is a 3.0 is beyond me. The other people who took the time to actually write reviews of this place were overwhelmingly positive, 4+. Looks to me like a few people just decided to trash the place by giving it 1 or 2 stars without even bothering to write a review. Sure, maybe they had a bad experience. I understand that. It can happen, but it's unfair to both the restaurant AND potential customers to not give any explanation why they gave such a low rating. And I want to add the bun bo bue at Pho Chan is my benchmark for this dish. Huge portion, great flavor. Thank you, Pho Chan."

"Large and Decent tasting siu Mai. Spicy wontons is sweet but not spicy. Pan fried Shrimps Chives too much fillings with not much shrimps. Radish cake with XO sauce barely had any XO flavor. Best thing is less expensive than most dim sum in Vancouver area."

"Pretty tasty and inexpensive compared to what others usually charge. I get a lot. I got the bone broth ramen. Only issue was the egg was well done. Think would be better if its usual like runny. Other wise no issues. The decor is lovely too."
